judge my photography... please!

What are good flickr groups to join for getting criticism about my photos? I've been in a "rate 5, post 1" groups for concert photos and poked around a few others but all I really see is a bunch of back-patting and bad shots with even worse advice. I'd like a group where I could post a photo and find out what I did wrong where and what to do about it next time.

I'll be doing a photography minor when I go in for Bachelor's #2 in a couple years, but in the meantime I'd like to see what I can learn from within the flickr community.

Thanks in advance!
[if you want to judge me, flickr link is in profile and you can MeMail/flickrmail/email or send a pigeon or something.]

[it stands for getting my own fucking blog]

Help me pick a CMS, so I can GMOFB (among other things) I'd like to pick a CMS to build a personal webpage off of; although it wouldn't be too difficult to put up HTML pages, I'd like to get some experience working with CMSes in case I need to do so in future.

I'm fairly proficient with X/HTML and CSS; I use mostly Coda to put stuff together (but have Dreamweaver CS3) and would like the following sections:

an about me page

multiple photo galleries

a portfolio section

a blog, mostly for detailing what I'm working on and/or interesting, work-related links

a fairly static colophone page

a contact page

As you can see, it's not really anything that would tax a CMS but it I would like something that is fairly flexible and tweakable because, frankly, I like poking around in the guts of things.
I've worked with Blogger before, and thought it was alright. At this point I'm leaning towards Wordpress but Movable Type also looks like an interesting option.
Thanks, folks.

introduce me to semiotics, please.

I'm interested in learning more about semiotics. What are some good books, websites, or other resources? Specifically, I'm looking for stuff on semiotics and either industrial or graphic design but I should probably start with a general introduction to the whole field.

Thanks!

help me pick EF lenses

I'm heading to the States in a month, and would like to pick up some Canon EF lenses for my film body (now) and DSLR (later). Interests and budget are after the jump. I'd like to pick up some EF lenses for the EOS film SLR I have at the moment, and the DSLR I plan on moving to next year (probably a 40D as a self-birthday/grad gift; conceivably a 5D if the 5DMKII drops and I can jump on a cheap one.)

Budget is $1200-1500 Canadian, which is about the same in American at the moment, and which I don't expect to increase in any meaningful way between now and November. I'll be down for the long weekend for my uncle's surprise 70th birthday party (I can't help but think that's not the greatest of ideas)

I took photography in high school, know my way around a darkroom and how rules of composition work, am currently reading through Ansel Adams' The Negative and will move to a DSLR when I get through the stockpile of film or my SLR dies. Anything on my flickr account (see profile) was shot with a Powershot S200, which I am most definitely constrained by.

My photography at the moment is either:
- concerts (amateur stuff ATM, although I do occasionally get photos into local music mags)
- family events (I end up behind the camera for birthdays, weddings, etc)
- not much landscape or architecture
- adventurey photos (I took the ol' K1000 out to the Sasquatch music fest, more to take pictures of the gang I was with versus the musicians)

I'm not interested in wildlife or macro work (hate bugs, allergic to lots of plants) but I like the idea of photojournalism and the elusive notion of capturing an image that is worth a thousand words.

Poking around Amazon.com, I like the 50mm f1.4 ($330) and the 85mm f1.8 ($340), and I should probably get a zoom, too. I like the idea of the 24-105mm f4L IS ($1100) or the 24-70mm F2.8L ($1200) but I don't know if I do need them, and then which one to go with. There's also the 28-105 f3.5-4.5($240) but the reviews make it seem very uneven in terms of QA.

cooking with (mild) allergies

I have been diagnosed with a number of non-life-threatening food allergies and been told to avoid them as best possible. Please suggest recipes, substitutions, general tips, etc. Forbidden foods listed after the cut. allergies: corn, rice, rye, wheat, eggs, cow's milk and cheese, oranges, strawberries, string beans, tomatoes, potatoes, shellfish, chicken, pork and chocolate.
other useful info: I'm in Vancouver, 22, male, decent in the kitchen, prefer things to be cooked quickly, and I don't eat beef for religious reasons.
secondary questions: what do I order if I eat out? can I no longer drink beer?

get your knock-off on: sunglass edition

Please help me find a pair of sunglasses similar to a pair way out of my price range. While shopping with a friend, we went into a Sunglass Hut on a "hey let's try on the goofiest stuff in the store" whim and I ended up putting on this pair of Pradas, which I like the look of, but frankly can't shell out $300 Canadian for. Thus, I'd like something that retains the essence of it while not costing me an arm and/or leg.
Recommendations online or in/around Vancouver are ideal; thanks in advance, folks!

how to care for selvage denim

Selvage denim: care and feeding I bought a pair of Gap jeans and they had a little metal tag that said they were "Selvage" and the inner waistband says that they're Japanese denim. Do they require special care and feeding? I Googled the jean name (Gough) and found a bunch of advice from forums for jean nerds but there's so much lexicon there that I'm totally lost.

In short: are there best practices for these pants? If so, what are they?

Domain Registrars in Canada?

I'm looking for a reliable, cheap, not awful Canadian domain name registrar. Kindly recommend away. there've been a couple for American sites, but I haven't seen any for Canadian registrars.
take my moth eggs! please!

I woke up this morning to find that a moth had laid eggs on a curtain in the computer room. How do I get them off? The moth is dead (and disposed of), and I'll put up a picture of the eggs shortly.

Soft food is still food... right?

SoftFoodFilter: how do I retain a somewhat balanced diet? I've just had my wisdom teeth (and a couple others) removed, I'll be having braces put in later this summer, and my jaw will be realigned at some point in the near future (thankfully, no breaking), so I'm doing a little research on soft food diets.

How do I get the "food pyramid" into a blender? Most things I can figure out, but I haven't got a handle on fiber (which is what this was originally about), and I'm also wondering what other tips and/or tricks MeFites may have.

also also: if this helps, 21, male, could lose a few pounds but I'm not sedentary, weakness for dark chocolate, no beef at all (Hinduism).
