About

What's the deal with your nickname? How did you get it? If your nickname is self-explanatory, then tell everyone when you first started using the internet, and what was the first thing that made you say "wow, this isn't just a place for freaks after all?" Was it a website? Was it an email from a long-lost friend? Go on, spill it.

I am one of the many librarians who appear to frequent Metafilter, which I guess makes me one of the geekier librarians out there. I mostly lurk on AskMe, but contribute occasionally, when I feel like I know what I'm talking about. Any additional info can be best found by visiting my page (which consists largely of info mirrored from other sites).

My nickname is left over from the early days of the internet (c. 1995) when women did not want to be easily identified as such, as there was harassment in various forms. So I chose a gender-neutral sounding "timepiece"; amusingly, the inspiration for it came from "hourglass" (yes, as in figure). Anyway, it has proved to be a great name, as I have been able to snag it as a username on virtually every site I've tried - I think there were 3 sites where I had to settle for "timepiece1".
