A long time ago in a magical place called 1996, I used to download MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3 format music files from the internet and write them onto Compact Disc-Recordable media. This process was called "burning MP3s".
At the time relatively few people had heard of MP3 files (WinAMP wasn't even around yet, let alone the iPod), and not many people owned CD burners. So "burnmp3s" sounded like a distinctive enough handle to use online.
