Favorite invention: Indoor plumbing. Not coincidentally, I grew up in Pennsylvania Dutch Country.

As for the internet, I found out about it in college (UNC, email, early Usenet) and started using it regularly as a grad student at Duke when a friend showed me how to read stuff about Star Trek.
