About

What's the deal with your nickname? How did you get it? If your nickname is self-explanatory, then tell everyone when you first started using the internet, and what was the first thing that made you say "wow, this isn't just a place for freaks after all?" Was it a website? Was it an email from a long-lost friend? Go on, spill it.

Richard is a proponent of Holistic Technology Design & Management with a strong focus on the user's experience. His expertise includes Web Site Management, Health & Consumer Informatics, and Web User Experience (including Web accessibility and Section 508 compliance). He is passionate about helping companies to maximize the impact and effectiveness of their Web/IT projects.

Richard moved to the US in 1989 after completing a BA in Chemistry from Oxford University. He has a PhD in Biochemistry/Biophysics from Washington State University and a post-doc fellowship in Medical Informatics from OHSU. Richard maintains an appointment as Clinical Assistant Professor at OHSU and continues to be an advocate for how the public can use the Internet to meet their health and medical information needs. He has been involved in the research and development of metadata models to assist in Web information storage and retrieval, interactive media to assist patients in their health care knowledge and decision making, and the use and efficacy of online health information.

He spent five years as the OHSU Web Services Manager within the Information Technology Group where he coordinated and planned the Web infrastructure, project managed several re-designs of the University Web site and the roll out of the first Intranet site, and consulted with departments with how to use and leverage the Web. He then spent 3 years as the Director of Disability Informatics at OHSU where he researched the use technology by people with disabilities, including Web accessibility and usability by people with cognitive impairments. Richard is currently the Business Technology Manager at the Bureau of Development Services at the City of Portland, Oregon, where he manages the permitting and case management information system and related technology.

Richard is a past Chair of the Internet
Professionals SIG
of the Software Association of Oregon (SAO) (formerly Internet Professionals Northwest (IPN), www.ipn.org).

Richard consults on Universal Web Design, Holistic Technology Management and the usability and accessibility of the Web, including Consumer Health Informatics and Informed Patient Decision Making. He has spoken at local, national and international conferences.
