200 romantic songs for a Valentine's Day themed playlist on YouTube, as suggested by readers of The J-Walk blog. 12 hours worth of many obvious choices, combined with just as many sweet surprises

My favorite V-Day Song

Or, on a less ironic note, any song off of The Magnetic Fields' 69 Love Songs.

Nice list, and thanks for posting it. I'm kind of surprised there's not any girl group stuff on there.

And everything the Eagles ever did should be hurled into the sun and never spoken of again.

This list will come in handy tomorrow as sit around and feel sorry for myself decide which girl I'll be taking out tomorrow.

As a single rider on Valentine's Day, I have this prescription from Dr. Osterberg to cure whatever ails me.

And I'll crank it. Because I can.

Glen Jones on WFMU just did a Valentine's Day themed set, here's a pop up player of that. I'm only a half hour into it, but so far so good.

That list is bullshit without "Somebody Got Murdered."

Perry Como? Bryan Adams? Jim Croce?

If I started playing that nonsense round Ms Jest, I'd be a single man come Valentine's Day. And rightly so.

The suggestions in this thread are already much better.

Can I add one? or two?

What about "I Want My Baby Back" by Jimmy Cross? What's more romantic than wanting just a few more moments with your true love?

Fiona Apple - Slow Like Honey (not on there)
Teena Maria - Portuguese Love (not on there)
No Nina Simone on there
A single Sade song?

Meanwhile, "I'll be missing you - Puff Daddy", is on there.

Bzzzt! Love song fail.

This is actually a really shitty list of love songs for the most part.

Split Enz - Message To My Girl is one of my faves and holds a sentimental place in my heart.

growabrain: I've been a fan of teenage tragedy songs since I was a kid, but I've never heard the phrase "splatter platter" before - that's great.

My two favorite love songs at the moment are:

The National - Bloodbuzz Ohio
Led Zeppelin - Over the Hills and Far Away

Apart from the Concha Buika and couple others, I didn't think much of that list. Here's some I would definitely include (the last two in particular):

Magnetic Fields - The Book Of Love
Chris & Cosey - October Love Song
Antony and the Johnsons - Mysteries of Love
Breathless - Cat Power
Ramones - I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend
Nina Simone - Wild Is The Wind
Undertones - I know a girl
Nick Cave - Into my Arms
Philip Glass - Knee Play 5

Angry breakup songs make a nice Valentine's Day antidote.

Thirteen - Big Star
Compass - Jamie Lidell
Murder or a Heart Attack - Old 97s

Last year my band did a punk cover of Kylie's 'Can't Get You Out of My Head' with me improvising anti-love poetry for the verses on V-Day

"Take me Home" is a great Tom Waits love song. It seems that to buy a recording of it - with him singing (rather than Crystal Gayle), you have to find a copy of the outtakes DVD from the 1982 musical "One from the Heart" - so that would explain why I've never heard it before.

It makes me think of a valentines playlist composed only of Tom Waits songs: the first half for those in happy couples: Picture in a Frame, Shore Leave, Kentucky Avenue, I'll Shoot the Moon, Grapefruit moon, Take it With me, I Want You. The second for those by themselves: 9th and Hennepin, House Where nobody lives, What's he building in there?, 16 Shells From a Thirty-Ought-Six.

Wow, I didn't realise someone could make the aria from Dido and Aeneas so ... boring. That is one of my favourite pieces of music, yet listening to the version here made it seem quite flat and unemotional.

Good mix of different styles on the list though.

I'd claimed the That's Life thread should've really waited for Valentine's Day, but the internet always yields up something appropriate.
