Hip hop EP inspired by film Moon

Selene is a hip hop EP inspired by Duncan Jones' fine science fiction film Moon. The beats, which heavily sample Clint Mansell's score for the movie, were created by Max Tannone, best known for mashup album Jaydiohead, Doublecheck Your Head and Mos Dub/Dub Kweli. The MC is Brooklyn rapper Richard Rich.

This is weird, strange, and quite nice.

The title score stands so tall that any chump could rap over it. This is decent stuff, but I'd love for Deltron or AWOL-One to give it a try.

I was quite impressed by the lyrics and delivery. Richard Rich is doing interesting things with his phrasing and voice. In the opening track, You Are Here, he's got a sing-songy delivery (that kinda reminds me of Anthony Kiedis, actually). Palindrone, which is a tough beat to rhyme over, he does admirably and alters his style to fit the busy track. These are my favorite songs, though I like the other three as well. That said, yeah, it's hard to fuck up too badly when you've got Clint Mansell to play against.

My vote is for the original score.

But how good a rapper is Sam Rockwell?

I wouldn't be surprised, actually, if Sam Rockwell had flow like spun gold.

This is pretty sweet! I haven't seen the movie or the score, so I don't know how much of me liking this is simply, hey, Clint Mansell, and how much of the lyrics are based on the film.

I haven't seen the movie

Stop everything, cancel all your plans, and see it. Now. As in, right now. Tonight.

It's one of the better SF films to come out in ages. Truly a callback to old-school films like Silent Running. My partner and I watched it, kind of half-assed at first, and by the end we were completely enthralled and gushed about it for about 15 minutes afterward.

And we don't tend to do that kind of thing.

Oh, and if you have red/green 3D glasses... the moon picture on that website resolves beautifully.

I can tell you that this question is answered on the Galaxy Quest DVD special features. Sigourney Weaver, Sam Rockwell, and Daryl "Chill" Mitchell rap

Enjoying the music, in the process of downloading the movie.

Hopefully it's better than my last MeFi recommended movie. Which one of you lunatics suggested I watch Teenage Caveman? Own up!

I like the beats and the lyrics just fine, but I sure wish Richard Rich would stick to rapping and not try to sing. Tone deafness is why they invented autotune.

Oh, and yeah, anybody who hasn't seen Moon-- go away and watch it right now, and for the love of Sam Rockwell, don't listen to this music first, it's spoiler city!!!

For additional sci-fi hip hop, with a focus on good music, try Deltron 3030. Thanks for this post.

This fails to me only because the rapper is half-hearted with it. He's not quite sure. That rarely works in rap. The beats are nice. Rich just doesn't seem to know how to come over them.

Musically this might be the best thing i have heard in a very long time, vocals are off kilter in an off-putting way and might not be the best but, just wow.
