Webstock! The best little web design (and development, and content) conference around. The kind of place with opening credits, swag that includes confidence-boosting pencils, all the free ice-cream you can eat, and NZ Sign Language interpreters for the whole event.
Also, lots and lots of clever people talking.
It was a while back now, but it's taken some time for the videos to stop misbehaving. Some of the more outstanding talks:
Also, lots and lots of clever people talking.
It was a while back now, but it's taken some time for the videos to stop misbehaving. Some of the more outstanding talks:
- Frank Chimero on chatting around the campfire
- Josh Clark on designing for touch
- Kristina Halvorson on how to make better web content
- Doug Bowman on making the web delightful
- Christine Perfetti on useful, usable, usability techniques
- Jason Santa Maria on typography
- Tom Coates on the network
- Merlin Mann closes by telling us how scared shitless everyone is (also, slides)
The last time I went to Webstock was 2010. But I did get to use time travel to skip my 30th birthday getting there, it gives you powers that super.
YMMV.

Yay, Webstock! But I'm surprised at how many web design conferences have absolutely tragic looking websites. The lineup is amazing, so it just seems backwards that it looks like someone vomited on this thing with Dafont and DeviantArt brushes. Web Design World's are equally as bad.

$1200 ticket price plus $650 per workshop was just too over-the-top for me.
