The thing about even the simplest trick of this sort...you can't practice, eh? I mean, it either is accomplished or there's hospital time. Respect.

Videos like this are why I insist my son uses a helmet... on his tricycle...

I got to think big with a book about Evil Knievil in fourth grade. My son can watch someone do this via helmet cam... for his entire life. I dread/wonder what way he will figure out how to break an arm (or worse).

This is rad.

And just for clarity: Cajones

you can't practice

while you can't practice the landing under the same conditions that you will be performing the trick in, you can practice the trick itself with a foam pit (probably better videos out there) or a similar setup.

Cojones! Thanks for that. Sorry for the spelling mistake, if the Mods would like to correct that for me please?

That is true. The lack of a Y chromosome creates what scientists call "Gyroscopic Dilleminoid Syndrome," making it physically impossible for a woman to do a triple backflip on a bike. Interestingly, though, the same condition actually enhances the female ability to do front-flips. Sometimes female BMXers will do one without even noticing.

It's amazing to see progression continue to happen in sports like bmx, skateboarding, snowboarding, etc. The envelope just keeps getting pushed farther and farther out to the line where you either stick it or you're scraped up and taken to the ICU.

There's a great story in the latest Outside about the recovery of snowboarder and olympic hopeful Kevin Pearce who was pushing the boundaries until a head injury nearly killed him.

There's also this video part of skateboarder Brandon Westgate that is painful to watch because of the number of slams he takes while pulling off some of the gnarliest stuff I've ever seen.

(from PinkBike story on the backflip - check out the neat step by step photo of the jump)

An estimated 2,000 spectators and some of New Zealand's best BMX riders converged on Spa Park for the Unit T3 Mindtricks BMX Jam and to witness Mildon's historic feat. Mildon also attempted the world's first double backflip tailwhip after his successful triple attempt but cased the landing. He walked away unscathed.

So one world record, and almost a second. I wonder if he's eligible for a Halberg Award? Especially if NZ doesn't win the Rugby World Cup this year (which we will of course...god help us if we don't).

You know what would really suck? To be the cameraman, and you film like 7 hard falls in a row, and then the guy finally nails it, but you miss the shot because you were distracted looking at a bird or something.

I bet that guy would feel really bad.

This really did seem to be a binary succeed/fail kind of trick. There was absolutely no "approach" phase on the jump, where he sights the landing, untucks, and absorbs the impact. He just kept the tuck all the way to the ground, and happened to hit it at the right millisecond.

Man, I remember when a double backflip was a big deal and people were saying that there was nowhere to go from there. Nobody was willing to go that far. I predict that in another 10 years we'll see someone do a quad backflip with the landing actually inside the ICU.

Why don't they have some kind of padding on the very start of the landing ramp? Does that corner, that you smash your head into if you screw up, need to be pointy and made of plywood?
posted by UrbanEye at 10:50 PM on May 28, 2011

I don't think he was at the top thinking, you know, this is a little dangerous, I need some padding on the front of the ramp.

Actually

I don't think he was at the top thinking.

I dread/wonder what way he will figure out how to break an arm (or worse).

He'll break a wrist on a fall from a skateboard.

Wrist guards are sold to inline skaters, so even skateboarders with elbow & knee pads look down on them, but they work.

A kid will tell you he'll tuck and roll in a fall & might even demonstrate this ability, but in a real, surprising, fall, he'll put his hands out. My nephew, my across-the-street neighbor, my son's friend, all skateboard-broken-wrist.

The best part about this video was the lack of a 15 minute introduction set to Korn, Linkin Park or any of their ilk, with helicopter flyovers, shots of the crowd and some kind of Joe Rogan narration, followed by 5 seconds of action which is extended by a montage of 1/10 of a second jump cuts into a 3 minute sequence followed by more nu-metal and an energy drink advertisement and some kind of credit reel listing every single person in the crowd, the producers, directors, the cameraman's wife's name, followed by a slow fade out. Also, I don't think I heard a single use of the word "Bro" in the whole video.

In other words, if anyone who edits these types of videos together for the Internet is reading this thread, this is how you do it.
