Doctor Who, 1980s anime-style. Made by MightyOtaking over four (or so) years.

That's really well done. Especially amazing for a fan effort. "Coffee Master" is just brilliant.

I've gotta agree. Awesome effort for a fan production. Only issue was a decided lack of...well...Doctor. But I certainly don't think it was to the detriment of the animation, because the best part of it, IMHO, were the mechanical designs and battle sequences and the like. Watching the Daleks and the Cybermen duke it out anime style is just as awesome as it sounds.

Yup, that's anime all right. Putting everything into battle scenes and making the rest ugly and incomprehensible.

I wanted to like this, but I can't say much about the end result other than that it's a great effort. The guy's been showing off clips for the last few years, and it always seemed overly ambitious.

Incidentally, this thread has spontaneously become the place where people are discussing the Doctor Who mid-season finale that aired yesterday. If you want to do so, you should do it there and keep this thread on the front page spoiler-free.

Glad to see in all that newfangled anime stuff they kept the tradition of making the assistant totally for-the-dads-tastic

I don't know who you are, but if you're gonna cause trouble, then do it on your own damn planet!

I just totally loved the bit where the camera started in the Cyberman pilot's eye and zoomed out until it had left the spacecraft. I haven't seen a great deal of anime full stop, let alone specifically 80s stuff, but that moment was so true to my distorted childhood memories that I giggled about it for ages.

I think it was mandated that every 80s cartoon had to have a pull-back-from-eye moment in the titles. I kept on expecting the Cyberleader to go 'CYBERMEN, TRANSFORM!'

Also I liked the Dalek-bashing moment. I miss Ace.

This was, by orders of magnitude, more entertaining than any episode of Dr. Who I've ever watched, and I still had a hard time getting to the end.

(yes, everyone, I saw 'blink,' ok?)

Considerably more enjoyable than the last couple of seasons of Who.

Whilst Ace was, well, ace, she wasn't a patch on Abslom Daak.

From the makers comment:
PS - for those complaining about total lack of story or narrative in this clip, I did always state from the start that it was only going to be an extended trailer with no plot. Think of it as highlights from a 24 epsiode series if there was one.

I'd totally pay for that boxed set

The way of having all the immensly powerful alien invaders fight each other while the pathetic humans ccould barely hold their own against a single enemy reminded me of all those wonderfully bad Godzilla movies. Is this a Japanese thing? Most 'merican stuff is one on one. AVP aside

Man, tough room. Have you seen this? Sure, the story makes sense, but its weakass flash animation self is so many orders of magnitude less great-looking than this effort that it's hard to put into words. And the official effort was worked on by an actual staff of animators and broadcast to a million people. If I were the BBC, I'd be really embarrassed after watching this.

I have to admit to one minor disappointment, though. Although I love that Pertwee was the Doctor they used -- I think you could make a strong case for Tennant being the most anime Doctor, what with his hair and his mania and his shouting and all, but Pertwee is the fightin'-est Doctor (as realized nicely in the cartoon), and he looks awesome here -- I was let down that they brought in this generic anime chick* rather than anime-ize someone canon. Anime Ace, Leela or Amy (though I guess Amy wasn't around when the project started) would have been pretty neat.

*Who I presume is someone I'd recognize if I watched more anime.

Loved it, for the little touches like the Master's TARDIS being a coffee vending machine, only reading "Coffee Master" in place of Coffee Boss. And he had my favorite Dalek towards the end. Heavy Weapons Dalek!

In an ideal world, this is how the BBC kept the show alive before the Eccleston reboot.

Screw anyone who is a Doctor Who fan that doesn't like this. You hit the target dead on. Doctor who translated through the style of Japanese Anime? Nailed it. Perfect. Great opening moment (Venusian Kung Fu) with the Doctor as a bad-ass - as well as telling his 'assistant' to cover up.

Would have liked some token scenes of the other doctors; as if a Japanese version of the show had been going on for 40+ years.

The colors are too bright and the production values are waaaaaay too high to be 1980s anime. So I guess I liked it?

Now that is a labor of love.
posted by egypturnash at 11:16 AM on June 5, 2011

yeolcoatl, remember how every series had an episode every couple of months where the production team splashed out the cash to make the animation really good? I figure this must be it. Every other episode of Dokuta-Huu for the next 12 weeks is going to be at 8 frames per second.

(Also: Daleks? Check. Cybermen? Check. Macross missiles? Check. PSY•S shout-out? Fucking CHECK.)

"Oh go put something warm on." Heh. This got the confrontation between mid-80's amine and Pertwee's Doctor down pat. I also have to say I love the depiction of the Cybermen, and how the Daleks were very tough but not unbeatable.

Somebody needs to give this guy a couple tens of millions of dollars to make feature animated films.

I also love that this is ArmyOfKittens' second FPP. Good choice. :)

Ha, great. The best part are the settings (Toyko City Hall -- though this wasn't around in the 80s -- Tokyo Tower, Sega arcade) that were in so many anime in the early 90s for no narrative reason.

Dammit, now I want to watch that. For some reason I feel like I'm suddenly in danger of selling my soul for a boxed set...why does the room suddenly smell of sulphur?

We thought it was great at our house, even if we couldn't figure out who the girl was supposed to be. I particularly loved the Dalek death rays, which felt much more Classic Who than the Daleks usually do (perhaps because they're not generally allowed to rack up body counts that way any more).

We got distracted on the question of whether Davros looks like Professor X with Cerebro on. I think if Professor X is a grape, the anime Davros was the same grape dried up into a raisin.

On a related note, was anyone else's reaction to the first bit of episode 7 this season, "My God, Rory just took a level in badass"?

I bet having The Master cruising around in a Boss coffee machine TARDIS would make for a worthy successor to the "alien Tommy Lee Jones" sponsorship deal.

I was very sad to see it taken off of Youtube-- but I bless whomever put it up on Metatube. It's a amazing clip, and Paul Johnson did a truly EPIC amount of work for this. His designs for the Cybermen are gorgeous, and the Daleks are really creepy.

Nthing those who said that this is far more enjoyable than the last season of Who...
