Heritage Documentation Programs is part of the National Park service and administers the Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) - the United States government's oldest historic preservation program - Historic American Engineering Record (HAER), Historic American Landscapes Survey (HALS) and Cultural Resources Geographic Information Systems (CRGIS)

The permanent collection of HABS/HAER/HALS "measured and interpretive drawings, large-format black and white and color photographs, written historical and descriptive data, and original field notes" is housed at the Library of Congress and can be accessed through the online database. It consists of records of about 40,000 sites.

As preservation junkies already know the National Park Service also oversees the National Register of Historic Places (database) and the National Historic Landmarks program (database).

I think this is a wonderful use of government money and resources. It probably costs and infinitesimal fraction of the budget. Your LOC links below the fold were more of a time hole for me than the main links.

Yeah, I knew they would be. I should have structured it differently but felt the need to explain things first.
