The track listed on the FPP sounded like the Requiem for a Dream drug taking scenes, set to a Windows 95 screen saver video.

This is 15 years too late for me.

Obviously this guy is standing on the shoulders of giants—I'm feeling a bunch of Autechre and some Plaid and maybe even some Plastikman in there—but I enjoyed it a lot, there is a lot of creativity and skill here. I prefer the music to the graphics; the first one in particular struck me also as a kind of homage to Autechre done with more lighting effects, and when I start thinking right away about how you can implement the cubes thing in Processing and Open Frameworks and Quartz Composer then it's all over...however nonetheless I enjoyed the visuals too. Cool stuff! I will keep my eyes out for this guy.

Semi-related digression, I really like the visuals the raster-noton guys do: alva noto's spray, or this beautiful piece with Ryuichi Sakamoto for example. Actually, bizarrely, one of the most visually compelling things I've seen in a while was Frank Bretschneider

where did the rest of my comment go whoops

...performing in Boston earlier this year, where he just put out a count-up (0, 1, 2, 3, 4...) which never ended, and you kept feeling like it was all of a sudden going to just explode, but it didn't and it was amazing. That is all I wanted to say.

dubitable: that Alva Noto / Sakamoto track is awesome, thanks for introducing me to them!

I'm also digging the music in the post - very atmospheric.

Did you write this FPP exclusively for me, or something?

There's a lot of more recent influences like Gui Boratto and Charlie May/Sasha here, too.

Yeah, I'm definitely referencing what I'm familiar with, which is a bit older. I know a bit of Gui Boratto but I'm not familiar with Charlie May or Sasha...more to check out! Thanks again for the post, I always love finding out about new music.

Charly May - homecoming (remixed by Sasha). Charly May was Sasha's ghost writer for a long time... their earlier stuff was trance, but more recently Sasha's been playing this kind of tech-y sound....

Also, i botched the link to Max Cooper's remix of Sasha in the original post (though what i linked is also good)

Great post, I love what Max Cooper's up to. It's a progression of the classic Nathan Fake IDM/minimal techno crossover, but with a dash more trance sensibility in there, and a real sense of dancefloor action rather than just home listening.

Anyway, there's obviously something special about his sound - we've booked him to play at our clubnight (well twice already), and people actually brought their copies of his 12"s to autograph. I've never seen that level of devotion before to a relatively underground DJ/producer. His live sets are awesome by the way, highly recommended.

Almost forgot, we've got some neat Max Cooper mixes on our site that he originally produced exclusively for us, with a load of his own stuff in them. So proof it were needed that he's got some great DJ skills as well as being a producer:

Max Cooper mix 1
Max Cooper mix 2
Xircus mix (Max Cooper & Jeet)

That's pretty much a perfect explanation. I was trying to explain to a friend why I thought his remix of xpander was completely brilliant, because it's based on a pretty profound understanding of dancefloor psychology. The tempo changes during the breakdown would absolutely destroy a dancefloor that's been lead into it properly.

The way it toys with expectations is just stunning -- one of the best remixes I've ever heard.
