Maybe this could start a wave of pop music uses in hostage situations as well.

Actually, the article is wrong. This is not the first time this has been done.

Remember the invasion of Panama, when Manuel Noriega was "arrested"? Before they bagged him, they surrounded the Presidential Palace with loud speakers and played loud rock music 24 hours as a form of psych warfare.

Think that is bad? Here in Detriot a judge sentenced a young man to 2 hours of listening to "Wayne Newton's Greatest Hits" after being cited for playing the music in his car loudly. Here's the story

Incidentally, this is a long time war tactic going back to the beginnings of time, what do they think war drums are for? Trumpets? Bag pipes (most understandably). Even the old fife and drum corps from the colonial days were once a form of psyops...

The U.S. has used it since loudspeaker technolgoy has been available. Remember them feds blasting Ozzy into the Waco, TX Branch Davidian compound?

Two hours? Two hours is nothin! Maybe three repeats ... he ought to listen to it six or seven times, till he knows Mr Newton's every minute inflection by heart.

Out here in Seattle, Muzak (site by Saltmine, plug plug) has been selling their country music catalog to companies in the "bad part of town." The McDonalds downtown plays country at an insane volume for what should be "ambient" music, and the number of people hanging out on that corner after dark is down to nil.

I'd tough it out just to prove to Stirling that she's a total dim-wit. What a damn stupid concept. If you want to get them out using excessively annoying noise, why the hell would you use music?
