Wonderputt

For those kept off the links -- particularly those with windmills -- by Irene, a flash alternative (via Kottke). Needs ice cream, but otherwise oojah-cum-spiff (via Wodehouse).

It's a pretty fun game but there seems to be a bug where it will repeatedly take strokes for me automatically in a couple places. Additionally the isometric graphic style when combined with the decision to show the whole course simultaneously makes it difficult to accurately take aim. A fun little diversion all the same.

The little animations are lovely. I enjoyed the setup with the field/snow/ice/water very much.

My god I really enjoyed this. And I hate/program games all the time!

Agree aiming is a problem. OTOH, it reflects a fair amount of imagination and a dollop of whimsy.

Given that I can't aim under the best of circumstance, that tradeoff works for me . . .

This reminds me a lot of Kirby's Dream Course. Part of the problem with Wonderputt is that the mouse position controls both aim and power, so if I get the right aim and want to adjust the power I then mess up my aim.

Aside: The lack of recent adventure golf games saddens me. It's been eight years since the last Mario Golf! Don't they know there's an untapped market here?

30 over par. :P
Fun, though.

Whimsy is a good word. It's child-like in the best sense. Love it.

I know, Wulfhere.

But there's going to be a Wii Mario Golf, and it's going to be amazing, and it's going to combine N64-style taunting with the Wiimote speakers, and it's going to bring back the miniature golf minigame, and it'll be the thing that finally persuades me to buy a Wii. Um, at least, I hope all those things will happen.

I thought this at first too and then I realized you don't click and release you just point and click. Once I figured that out, it didn't happen anymore.

If you finish the first level it adds bonus pins to hit for the next.

I love that they call a stroke better than eagle is an albatross...played this through a few times this past week.

I was so delighted by this, and thought it was genuinely beautiful.

5 over par for 36 holes. It says I've won some badge. Fun diversion!

Fun, fairly easy once you figure out the aim (I eagled or albatrossed 4 out of the first 6 holes before I got breod), the animations are really the saving grace of this game. Cute/creative.

So you only did 6 holes? It gets more challenging after the first 9.

Yup, because that's all it was able to entertain me for. Any harder, and I would have gotten VERY annoyed with the aiming mechanishm.

167,784 points, yay!

I also finally got the 9 perfect holes badge.
