Theme Park Piracy

The depth of the divide between the different narratives about copyright protection in China was on full display this week, when People's Bank of China adviser Li Daokui and U.S. Ambassador to China Gary Locke squared off at a forum sponsored by the World Economic Forum.

"Mr Locke has been an outstanding U.S. ambassador and has faithfully carried the message that the U.S. wants to give to our audience: to protect the economy there needs to be intellectual property protection," Li said. "But I disagree."

Angry Birds is a fun game but frankly I'm sick of it as a cultural meme.

Park Visitor Presses Button Too Early on Green "Boomerang" Bird, Kills Three

"This [Angry Birds attraction] serves as a method for people to purge themselves and to gain happiness," a park official told the Chinese gaming website Gamersky.com.

I usually do feel happier after a successfull, uh..., purging.

Somewhere behind the Great Firewall of China, I like to imagine there's a Chinese rip-off of Metafilter, where FPPs about Hu Jintao contain comments like "Surely this..." and the mods are called called "Filthy western capatlist pig-dogs" in Metatalk after the Hu Jintao FPP is deleted (just as every Hu Jintao FPP before it was).

I don't like the vibe those birds are bringin' to this party.

License?? Next they'll be charging me for my Miffed Amphibian theme park.

There is also a Blizzard-themed park called Joyland.

I was hoping for DQ Ice Milk fountains, Oreo cookie cars, and caramel sauce roller coasters. China - your copyright rip offs are missing a key demographic (middle aged Asian Homer Simpson wanna be's).

This Angry Birds story was all over the web a week ago, except all the stories were about how Roxio wanted to sign a deal with the theme park and make it legit.

Ooh, does this mean that a Mafia Wars theme park can be far behind? Suggested motto: "Say 'ni hao' to my little friend!"

Do they use real birds? PETA will just have a field day.

I hope that people dressed as green pigs follow you around and laugh at you whenever you get lost, throw up on a ride, or drop your hotdog on the ground.

China Copies Austrian Town Design

Is there's a desert town in Nevada that totally copied the Eiffel Tower? And lower Manhattan? And part of the Giza Plateau?

Where's the Bioware theme park? I'd be all over that.

I'm a miserable ethnocentrist, I guess; stories like this always get my hackles up. "Freakin' China," I think. Which also makes me a miserable hypocrite since I'm pretty firmly against IP/copyright crap.

So they manufacture our smartphones, on which we heartily enjoy our avian-themed pursuits...and they get shit for playing said game (bound by the laws of actual physics) outside, in the "fresh" air? Well pardon China for not coming up with the best ideas, and having disposable capital and novelty-sized slingshots. Do we think they can't afford an intellectual [sic] copyright settlement?

Chinese Metafilter: A method for people to purge themselves and to gain happiness

Yeah, Yeah, I know, take it to Chinese Metatalk, we don't want to hash it out on the Red.

Fuck y'all that is awesome. Giant real life slingshots? Have you been to Busch Gardens? This sounds waaaaaay more fun.

I've written about this on Mefi but I'll do it again: so there is also a Macau-copy of this Nevada-town's simulacrum of Venice. In fact, it's significantly bigger than the Vegas-copy "original".

Back to this tale, much respect for this park, as opposed to all the other shanzai's; you need a fair amount of creativity and original thought to convert a video game into an amusement park. The only question is how closely it matches with the official Angry Birds experience; if Roxio wants to work with these guys, the answer could be "quite close".

Guys, it's Rovio. Roxio makes the CD burning bloatware.

If you watch the video, it becomes clear that they have not done very much playtesting. The birds don't have enough mass to actually knock anything down. They just bounce off the structures. *fail*
