NASA artist Herbert "Bert" Winthrop, has died at 95.

As an artist for North American Rockwell, Winthrop is probably best known for his painting of the Space Shuttle for the Saturday Evening Post (July-Aug. 1975) and a symbolic portrait for the Apollo Soyuz Test Project. The Shuttle painting grew out of his design for the proposal for building the Shuttle.

He was also a lively commenter at the New York Times website.

A true visionary of the space age. He helped create the images people see in their minds when they think of "the space program".
