Publishers of this excellent book (+film) on electronica were trying to raise awareness of afghanistan's problems before WTC. Their subsequent statement impressed me and I'm planning to buy some music. Buying from decent people is a painless way to change the world - where else for more slightly-more-ethical-than-normal retail therapy? (clunky frames site, but you can suffer a little)

Trying to keep the front page text down to size I didn't really say just how good the book is - if you're looking for an easy to read (but intelligent) history of hip-hop, techno, drum n bass, ambient, etc. then I'd really recommend it (and I suspect that the CD and film would be good too).

On the WTC/ethical shopping side, I was prompted to post the link because of the contrast between their approach and the bland "strong but caring" statements that seem to be on a lot of big business sites these last few days. I know that you can shop at places like oneworld, but it's rare to see Caipirinha's mix of straight commercial site plus philanthropy. So, any others?

Andrew: nothing clunky about the site or design in my opinion.

RAWA is another site that was trying to raise awareness about problems in Afghanistan before the suicide attacks, with special consideration for women's rights. The site's photo galleries are slow to load but provide a heartbreaking look into the lives of people there.

I've seen the film and I highly recommend it if you're into electronic music at all, or even if you aren't. I guarantee you will learn something you didn't know, or at least re-learn it in a fascinating way. It's not without its faults, but when have you seen a perfect documentary, hm? Seek it out.

yeah .. Modulations is wicked, especially compared to better living through circuitry which is the most godawful documentary on the subject ever. (what do the crystal method have to do with ANYTHING ? let along electronic music).

What is the crystal method?

skylar - I can't give URLs to what I see (only to inner frame contents); there's at least two ways to view the CDs (one nice, the other as 6 separate lists); some of the text is so small I had to read the source. But what am I doing dissing a site I posted?!

modulations is worth seeing simply for the appearance of crazed and jolly german Panacea talking about broken beat.
