Now this nation that I love is fallin' under attack.
A mighty sucker-punch came flying in from somewhere in the back.
Soon as we could see clearly through our big black eye,
Man, we lit up your world like the fourth of July.

...
Oh, justice will be served and the battle will rage:
This big dog will fight when you rattle his cage.
An' you'll be sorry that you messed with the U.S. of A.
'Cos we'll put a boot in your ass, it's the American way.

yep, just regular old patriotism. that's probably why the song is subtitled "the angry american." comparing the september 11th attacks to a bar fight is entirely appropriate and level headed and just shows love for our country. obviously.

I'm pretty sure the high-voltage current of pure unadulterated broriffic evil released by placing Sammy Hagar and Carrot Top in such close proximity cancels out the Craig Ferguson awesomeness. Starting from zero, all you've got is a New Country good ole boy superstar questioning the integrity of people who enjoy the actual taste of beer as well as its intoxicating properties. Warm Bud Light probably does taste better out of a red Solo cup, because they're made of basically the same materials. But I still don't really want to drink at that party.

So yeah, it's all curious and almost charmingly crude like the great spinning butter wheel at the Roy Rogers at an Interstate rest stop, but I'm pretty sure it's not good for society.

It's interesting that you're so very angry with metaphor.
All he did was write a song, in the wake of a hugely inpactful event, that echoed the emotions of many, if not most Americans. That's part of the job description for pop musicians.
You're well within your rights to take issue with that emotional response, but if your rhetorical skills are so weak that all you can think to attack with is cursing and name calling then it's a delicious irony that you chose "hateful fuck".

mikoroshi: All he did was write a song, in the wake of a hugely inpactful event, that echoed the emotions of many, if not most Americans.

And directly from Toby Keith:
This was written a few days after the September 11th terrorist attacks. My father was a soldier in the Army in the ‘50s and always flew a flag to show his patriotism. I had just lost him in a car wreck six months before the attacks took place, so I wrote my feelings down. I never really intended for this to be a song. It was originally titled “Angry American.”
And he has a cheeky side, see: As good as I once was. It's more of a pop country song, but he can laugh at his own (stage) bravado.

I prefer to think this is a genuine homage to a previously unsung American icon, instead of a cynically planned, deliberately crafted marketing strategy. I refer to Keith's appeal to his demographic by referencing a universal and easily recognizable but heretofore disregarded motif - the red Solo cup. It is anti-bourgeois, anti-intellectual, beer drinkin', good ol' boy American goodness. It's even red for the blood we shed spreading Freedom and Democracy around the world.

As for the Solo people, this would be brilliant if they were in on it.

Although on some occasions, the Red Solo Cup is used to designate that the beverage therein must be non-alcoholic. On most occasions, the Red Solo Cup costs $2-$5, depending on the contents of the keg.

And someone always loses the Sharpie, so remember to bring your own. You can use it to personalize your cup, and if a reveler should pass out on the couch later, you can personalize him too.

Keith is really interesting---the Angry American I think is an anolomy, and an anolmy constructed out of anger--and i think anger is as legitimate a reaction as anything else--I will go on record as understanding both Sontag' and Keith's reaction--though I am closer to Sontag.

I like Keith, he (like Shelton, really) is one of those artists who argues in favour of a radical inclusiveness in country music (I Love This Bar) and works mostly in favour of pleasure unmediated by convention (the basically pro adultery song What Stays in Mexico)--he is being ironic here, but also talking about genuinely how much he loves drinking (and by extension fucking) I like country music that is unapologetic about how much it loves drinking (and by extension fucking)

Shelton's new album has a song with the line Raise that Red Dixie Cup, w/i the same tradition.

Solo cups are especially great if you live in an area where people like to "dip", i.e., chew tobacco. These people need to walk around at a party with two identical cups. As the night wears on, the likelihood of someone confusing their beer cup for their dip cup approaches 1. And then hilarity ensues.

It's one of his popular songs. I'm pretty sure most of the good breakup songs are written about exes the singer doesn't care about anymore. And I'm sure he's still proud of America, and still against it's enemies. And America CAN kick anyone's ass. A fun way to win arguments is to point out that the only reason the smug mofo laughing at you is alive right now is because America doesn't care enough to turn their country into a thin sheet of glass.

I'm a bit touchy because on 9/11 my college classmates were calling for peace and apology. I was one of the lone voices of rage.

I lift my cup to this, red Solo cup.

Lovecraft In Brooklyn: "I'm a bit touchy because on 9/11 my college classmates were calling for peace and apology. I was one of the lone voices of rage."

Good thing that rage thing ended up winning over the day though, right? Turned out to work so well.

Who the hell 9/11'd my thread?

Sigh.

Toby Keith is fifty years old. If you are fifty years old and like going to keg parties you need an INTERVENTION.

Exactly what you need if you are Hank Williams Junior's age and all your rowdy friends are coming over to watch Monday Night Football with you. I guess these guys were too busy going to keg parties to get around to reading Symposium.

It's like Tom T. Hall for the 21st century.

Yeah, I dunno. Faster Horses is still my favorite country song of all time.

Um, back to the song...it was cute. The video was cute too, though it lost points for including Jeff Dunham. Earned them right back with Sammy Hagar and Larry Bird, though.

As problematic as that 9/11 song was (I still think it wasn't as manipulative or disgusting as this one, which I swear to God was a slow dance at one of my last high school dances. In 2003.), I still can't bring myself to dislike Toby Keith. I don't know why. Maybe it's because he's willing to make fun of himself - see the song he recorded for Stephen Colbert's Christmas special.

Let's enjoy the fun stuff, I suppose.

I assumed he made both of these songs in an effort to make money -- either from kickbacks from a plastic cup company, or jingoistic rubes who listen to falsely patriotic songs.

(I really never want to be the person who points out these things. But seeing as no one else has... I gotta ask I am the only one who finds it somehow surprising (even in a country music video) to see a production with a cast of a hundred people or so where, I think, every single person is white? Or is it just a given that that's what "country" means?)

gompa: Warm Bud Light probably does taste better out of a red Solo cup, because they're made of basically the same materials.

You say that as if corn-based plastics were a bad thing.
