Calling All Bond Villains

Project Utopia is the ultimate in super villain bases; a bespoke floating island that can travel the oceans.

With a 50 metre radius, and an observation deck 65 metres above the waterline, you'll be the envy of all the other villains. A hollowed out volcano? Pah! I spit in your direction. The only thing cooler than this would be your own moonbase and even that's going to be a bit dusty.

With the Project Utopia, you'll have room to store your ample collection of watery vehicles with its built in wet dock and you can take to the air from one of its helipads.

I guess you're wondering how much it's going to set you back, but hey -- You're a frickin billionaire super villain, I'm sure you can afford it.

Besides, can you really put a price on world domination?

Bespoke in the sense of custom-made? I thought that was for garments.

Who the actual fuck is the supervillain going to marry to make her wear this thing?

Paypal founder Peter Thiel probably has five or six on order. (Self-link)

An azimuth thruster is just a propeller in a pod that can rotate through 360° horizontally.

Yeah, so this is still the same project intended as a tax haven for the super-rich? Because they will live in international waters and therefore be subject to no countries laws?

... or .... ... protection?

Arghhhhh mateys, off to the high-seas we go!

Yes. And considering how often they break down, I'm thinking they don't have nearly enough of them for reliability.

The mega-rich don't need to go offshore for that.

Frankly, it sounds horrible, but I don't covet the seas.

How is it floating, four little spindly legs and a central spire thats tiny compared to the top end?
posted by Slackermagee at 2:58 PM on December 12, 2011

Or rather, how would it float?

The Economist takes this sort of thing seriously. My favourite design problem is how to communicate with the rest of the world when they are both remote and probably hostile: for example Satellite and fibre optic cable links are going to be problematic.

This is brilliant. All it would take is a couple cans of black paint and you've got your own Hall of Doom.

From the looks of it those rings are in fact full circles, suggesting that there's a mirror-image of the visible structure on the bottom. Full of air, I suppose.

I seriously do not believe that anyone who actually has the money to buy such a thing came by it in a legal manner.

The word "bespoke" becomes more unsavory every month. If you even link to a site that contains that word, you are no longer my friend. If you ever speak the word (unlikely; I've never heard the word spoken out loud), I will have to rethink my current no-kill policy. Yes, I realize I have unfriended myself. Fine. Better for my spiritual path.
