"The Luminescent Orchestrii and Carolina Chocolate Drops (previously) were each performing at a folk festival in Memphis when an impromptu jam session led to a formal collaboration."
Jump to 3:55 in the jam session for the song proper.

Hey! I know that guy doing sound with the glasses! He is one of the rockingest old time bassists in New York City (and elsewhere). And a great sound guy to boot!

I'm glad to see they link to the EP in the video. That EP was fantastic.

And the fellow with the bullhorn/ guitar/ hair is Sxip Shirey, who we've seen before.
There is a parallel universe in which the US congress is a jam session like this one, except huge and nonstop and everyone's invited -- with members joining and leaving as they introduce, debate, and resolve important national issues in the form of call-and-response singing. The tighter the harmonies, the closer to agreement. When a bill becomes a law, they turn on the mics and get a couple of high-quality takes. Cops carry boom boxes. And so forth.
What I'm saying is: CCD for President in 2012.

The guy from Luminescent Orchestrii's offhand comment about how "old timey" music is basically just proto-trance has just blown open my mind in some really pleasurable ways.
Also the song is really good fun. Makes me wish I was in a jam band again.

Doleful Creature, I'm an old time fiddler and that is always how I try to explain the appeal of old time to others (musicians and non-musicians alike). We sit in a circle and play and play and the music rises up out of the middle and it is MAGICAL.

You know, Polyhymnia, that just makes perfect sense and I can't believe it took me so long (and a post on MetaFilter) to fully grok it.

I saw the Chocolate Drops last month, first I'd heard them, and man am I in love with that group.

I've been a fan of CCD since the previous post. I was just thinking about buying some more of their music. This song is great.

I first heard the Carolina Chocolate Drops at the folk festival in Ann Arbor a couple of years ago, very talented artists.
