The Tyrese Sessions
March 2, 2012 1:50 PM   Subscribe

When rapper Tyrese saw the name Amber Rose on a cc'd email, he contacted her asking to collaborate on some tracks. Only problem is it was Amber Tamblyn, and she decided to have some fun with him. (site NSFW, bad language in demos)

While the conversation is somewhat entertaining, it's Tamblyn's demos that make this.

Before this post I don't think I could have told you anything about Amber Tamblyn (including, probably, whether she exists) but now she is my favorite.

Why? It's brilliant as it is. Mental and hysterical. B-list trollin'.
And All in Favor has some genius bits.

Damn! I now want to buy a rap album by Amber Tamblyn, and, even though I am a long-time Amber Tamblyn fan, that's not a sentence I would've said this morning.

She was great on the Unusuals, but she was even better on that last track.

!!! Good thing there's no one around me right now because I was laughing like a maniac by the end of the demos. I hope she puts out a full album.

This is amazing. Amber Tamblyn is now my favorite rapper. She should start beef with Childish Gambino for maximum comedy.

Perhaps Dr. House would have been more fond of her had she used some of this ...language. And, conversely I can see why Mr. Cross IS.

That All in Favor track is better than anything MIA's done in the last 5 years.

Sometimes I really get a kick out of reading things like this, but in this case I can't help but cringe. Probably because Tyrese didn't do anything wrong.

I love that Tyrese's sig is 'Respectfully, Tyrese Gibson.'

It goes great with messages like 'Hit me now' and 'What u on?'

Russ is a friend I mine's uncle and I want her to introduce us so bad.

I mean being Riff is enough, but after his 2011 showing up in Drive and Todd Margaret, dude is just the coolest in my Big Book of Coolnesses.

Can't believe he's almost 80.

It's hilarious because she messed with a hip-hop musician! Rap isn't real music anyway, so it's totally justified to fuck with and humiliate a fellow artist, am I right?

I don't know, I thought it was pretty funny, and I like hip-hop. It doesn't seem all that mean-spirited to me.

Because no one who uses slang is capable of ever being respectful in any context.

It's not that, it's the juxtaposition of extremely informal language with a very formal signature.

You know what I like? I like that she sends these demos, and he's absolutely, unquestionably honest in his assessments about them being terrible. "That song was not it ... not even remotely" and "That was trash", indeed. You have to respect a potential co-collaborator who doesn't pull punches.

and I suspect the real Amber Rose is probably grateful he heard the songs, judged them trash, and from this decided it wasn't her.

If you get random text messages out of the blue and you DON'T mess with the sender a little bit, you are soulless and should ask God for your money back.

What a jerk.

If you're pranking a complete stranger at least have the class to cushion the blow a bit at the end. Explain who you are, and how the circumstance came about that you're pranking them. Plus, pranking someone you don't know means they can't really get you back, which is kind of low.

Still kinda funny. But she's definitely a jerk.
posted by billyfleetwood at 4:18 PM on March 2, 2012 [2 favorites]

Well it is on the internets now so he will find out eventually. I don't think it was too terrible, he just assumed she was Amber Rose and she just played along. Kind of a trip that he got pranked by someone more famous than the person he was actually trying to contact.

Yeah, someone posted this post verbatim elsewhere and got roundly called out for that. I must confess I am unfamiliar with his work and his Wikipedia page said both R&B singer and rapper and I went with the latter, mistakenly it seems. Cheerfully withdrawn.

Oh I'm sorry. Yeah I see this was posted elsewhere (Neogaf??) and a lot of people mentioned that. Didn't mean to pile on! I just got hung up on the very first line of the FPP and could.not.go.on without clearing that up. It's a thing with me.

I don't know who Amber Tamblyn is but all of this seems like it was done without any malice.

"All in Favor" is my vote for best song of the year. Seriously, I'd laughed and laughed until I got to this track and for a few seconds I was like, "Oh, yeah, shit, that's right, politics is fucked right now" and started to get real serious and nod along, but then she started talking about Mexican, and it was all over for me and I was laughing again.

Amber FTW!
