Mari0 is a fan-made mash-up of Nintendo and Valve Software's games, with a 4-player co-op mode and a level editor. And as a nod to Team Fortress, there are hats. Downloadable for PC, OS X and Linux.[via]

Quick, download it before the famously litigious Nintendo notice the phrase "A complete from scratch recreation of Super Mario Bros" and C&D anyone standing close enough. If it is down when mefites read this, memail me.

Actually Nintendo doesn't seem to nearly that litigious. Super Mario Bros. Crossover has been around for months now, long enough to get a 2.0, and it hasn't been taken down yet.

Man, these controls are tough. I wish I could just tell it that P1 DOESN'T have the mouse, and use the right stick of a PS3 controller or something to aim.

Go grab a copy of GlovePIE.

This looks awesome. Thank you Shigeru, you've given the world so much. And thanks to those who took his work and made it something special.

I give up. How does the portal gun work? Other than using the trackpad to aim and shoot?

Oh, and on play this is *so* great.

speaking of valve, supposedly, they're creating a console...

In a perfect world, every single video would start with that shot from The Wizard.

Assuming you know how "Portal" works, that's pretty much it. Left click for a blue portal, right click for orange. The game seems pretty limited in the types of surfaces it will allow portals on, and the time limit tends to discourage any really clever stunts without craploads of practice. Nevertheless, it's a pretty perfect hybrid of the two games.

Linux version requires Love 0.8.0, which is not easy to find - latest release on the Love website is 0.7.2. Some Ubuntu packages for 0.8.0 here (but not for lucid).

I'll play this one later, then.

Took me a while to figure it out. Switch to player 2, hit enter on "Mouseowner". Now player 2 has the mouse and player 1 doesn't.

I find this game considerably harder than the original Super Mario Bros., primarily because I keep finding new and inventive ways to kill myself.

Aha! That's really helpful to know. Thanks NMcCoy! Now to sync up a PS3 controller with my computer via Bluetooth or something…

Thanks for the link motty, that's what I needed to get it going. Sorry they don't have a release for Lucid!

Ah, I finally figured out the portal gun. On an Apple laptop, you use cmd-click for the alternate (right) click. The typical way to do this on a Mac is control-click, but that doesn't work here.

Jabah, you can also click with a second finger resting on the trackpad, if you're on a MacBook. That's another way to right-click.

Now that I've had a chance to sit down and play it for a bit, I really have to agree with NMcCoy.

There's a 4-player Let's Play of Mari0, with a player apparently bent on antagonizing the other players.
