There seems to be a lack of cat pictures online I've noticed.

Sleeping always cats fill me with a sense of admiration and envy. They always look so peaceful and comfortable. I think sleeping all day like a cat would be awesome.

What the heck. That should read: Sleeping cats always fill me with a sense of admiration and envy. argh. I want to go back to bed.

At least one of those cats is not asleep. The one by the water bottles is clearly waiting to be defibrillated.

My cat would never make it in this contest. The little meatball sleeps with his regular eyelids open so you can see the creepy inner one. We think that might be why he's the world's leading exporter of eyeball goo, though.

It disturbs me to see pictures of sleeping or drowsy animals. It makes me think they're either dead or drugged.

Damn, Fatty could have been a contender, he has mastered the many poses: exposed white belly with paws up, paws over eyes, fallen AT-AT, curled up on laptop bag, curled up in crotch of trousers left on bed. This post is nearly enough to make me figure out how photos get from phone to internet.

I'm pretty certain that cats have no need for a Sleep Awareness Week, as they are amply aware of sleep already.

Makes me want to take a cat nap.

I spent much of the weekend on the couch, suffering from a dreadful cold, and I was slept on by cats a lot. I'm sure it helped. This cat and this cat did the sleeping on me.

Only 10? Only 10?

Everyone knows that everything tastes better with cat hair in it. I didn't make that up.

Of course I think my cat should have won, though I would also consider nominating my girlfriend's libertine bunch.

I don't have a good picture of the cat sleeping with his eyes open, so here's one of him so deep in sleep he didn't care that I covered him in remotes.

No offense but he looks like the character Arseface from the Preacher comics.

It must be a domestic cat survival trait to be as cute as possible while sleeping. Or maybe they sleep so many hours a day because they feel the need to practice their cuteness skills.

Here are a few photos of my guys:
George showing a distinct brand preference.
Chopin as jungle cat.

I just realized I have no adorable pictures of either Steve or Quotes asleep. This must be remedied!

Why isn't there a calendar with 365 days of the cats of MetaFilter?

And why isn't there a page on MetaFilter devoted to nothing but MeFites cats?
This should be a pony, people!
posted by BlueHorse at 4:46 PM on March 5, 2012

I am 90% sure there was a MetaTalk proposing a calendar but I can't find it.
posted by desjardins at 4:48 PM on March 5, 2012

So much squeeee!

Am I the only one who had to use Google to find out whether "National Sleep Awareness Week" was just for cats? Because... I didn't get enough sleep last night?

Shoggoth is a champion sleeper.

Evidence #1.

Evidence #2.

Evidence #3. (Why is she not afraid to sleep with her throat exposed like this? Does she have no wild animal sense remaining?)

Evidence #4.

Evidence #5 (From when she was a kitten and able to fall asleep while being dangled in the air.)

And evidence #6: the cutest one of all.

Thank you, once again, Metafilter, for providing an opportunity to post cat pictures on the internet.

I would think this is cute except I know for a fact that cats dream about eating you when you die alone and unnoticed.

How would you get your cat wedged into a scanner ?

I suggested the Cats of MetaFilter calendar in the naked MeFites calendar thread last year, but I don't think it got to any sort of planning stage. Some calendarsmith should get on that! I'm not sure if the naked people calendar ever got made.

Here's a cat (not mine) sleeping on some art, with another one in the background. Here's my cat, dreaming he's a monorail and endorsing the Slanket.
posted by Metroid Baby at 4:50 AM on March 6, 2012

Actually, srboisvert, I know personally of two cats who were in a home with their dead owner for a week. They did not eat her. They were, however, badly traumatized by the experience.

They are Siamese cats... I wonder if that makes a difference.
posted by kinnakeet at 10:16 AM on March 6, 2012

OMG, Metroid Baby! That's Art Cat! (Well, that's what I call him/her).

kinnakeet - That they are Siamese just means they screamed about it. I'd be surprised the neighbors didn't notice, except they were probably used to all the MEOWing.
posted by maryr at 2:29 PM on March 6, 2012

...Oh my goodness. In fact, Metroid Baby, we appear to have photographed Art Cat on the same art. On the same day.
