Piranhas fins usually regenerate within a month.Body bites even faster! I never knew this. Any other strange facts?
How slugs copulate. This one actually solved a puzzle for me. We'd seen a single slug swinging from a thread over our doorway and we wondered what on earth that was about. Now we know.
Niahmas, I liked the link about the pirahnas. Weird but interesting!

It makes sense if you think about it. Given the piranha's "feeding frenzy" behavior, inevitably more than a few fish will get bitten accidentally. Natural selection got rid of the ones who couldn't bounce back from a few bites long ago.

The Straight Dope is an excellent resource for finding out all sorts of crazy information. Since realjanetkagan started it, here's How Porcupines Copulate from that site.

boaz: What's the quick & handy web-term for "I laughed so hard and so long that all the cats fled the house because they thought I'd gone mad!"?
BEST ever and I really needed it. (What sent your link over the top for me is that I love porcupines and I've read a lot about them researching a story and this just makes them even better!)
Wow. I'm still trying to catch my breath. Wow.

According to Biological Exuberance: Animal Homosexuality and Natural Diversity by Bruce Bagemihl (St. Martin’s Press, 1999, page 472): "Male and female homosexuality also occur in North American Porcupines [Erethizon dorsatum], including periods of exclusive homosexual activity among males."

OOPS! Bad link above (too early in the morning). See Eric the Gay Penguin and Other Stories for a light-hearted review of Bagemihl's exuberant book.
