Snake bags and mullet wigs does not a costume make. I thought Halloween was supposed to be about looking scary to keep the evil spirits away? I also dislike the idea of buying a costume - seems disingenuous. Slightly more inside...

My all time favorite costume was "The Crow" - fighting for good, yet scary and bad-ass all rolled into one.

What are you going as? I need some help this year.

I usually have some elaborate thing all worked out, and then get lazy and go as a vampire.
By 'go', of course, I mean that I just show up, and stahrrt tavking lihke thees.

The one day every year when my unintentional 'goth' look pays off.

Actually, I follow the reasoning that on 15deg Scorpio (Hallow'een) the spirits from the people that died the previous year were able to come back and visit thier families/friends before going on to thier final destination (re-incarnation, "Heaven", whatever). As someone who may be visited, making a place at the table or leaving a glass of water out for the spirits is considered a matter of course at my home. To go along with that I like the explaination that the wearing of costumes was used to escort the dead out of town at the end of the night, and help them on thier way.... therefore you are not trying to Scare the spirits, but to make them at ease with you.
