Battle for Asciion [Flash] is an old school shoot 'em up in the vein of R-Type and Gradius, with an additional nod to ROFLcopter. Viewable in your choice of black-and-green, black-and-amber or black-and-white displays, along with a Textshotâ„¢ function for preserving those 1337 moments.

I'm almost possible this is just an ascii transcription of R-type. But my memories are at least 20 years old...

Is there any way within the game to figure out what the controls are? This trend in flash games to not bother with any explanation of how one interacts and just throw you blindly into the game without explanation is a real turn-off to me.

OK, push Z to fire, push X to change weapons... is there any way to have autofire? Tapping Z over and over and over again is a bit of a pain.

If you wait in between games, a screen comes up telling you what the controls are.

As an aside, I've not noticed any trend in flash games to not tell you what the controls are. On the contrary, I've noticed a trend in flash games to spend the first few levels of every game in some kind of more or less explicit tutorial mode, often with little text notes in the background explaining every tiny detail of what works how and what keys do what. This is great for casual gaming, but no good for an old school homage of the kind linked above. Having an instruction screen in the 'not playing yet' bit is spot on for that.

Clearly Scientist and I have been playing different games lately.

I can't play this for very long before my hands hurt. I miss autofire.

The game mechanics are more like Gradius. R-Type doesn't have powerups for your ship beyond speedup; they're for your Force Device.
