Whenever this war is over, they'll be looking for a new government. This guy is thinking ahead.

Mohammed Omar several times to surrender suspected terrorist Osama bin Laden and spare his already war-ravaged nation further damage from the U.S. airstrikes.

No. This time, we have to "go all the way to Damascus", which, in this case means destroying every last piece of OBL infrastructure and make sure all the chemical, biological and possible nuclear weapons are taken out.

I figured a story this important would get broader play, so I've been checking all the usual suspects, and none of them are carrying it. I did, however, find this story at the Washington Post which mentions the story as a rumor but dismisses it as being disinformation.

I think it's a hoax.

The Independent has this background. They read him as a Rudolph Hesse figure. Most likely the 'wired mullah' who wanted to put the Taliban leadership on the net has returned to his boss, according to the BBC report. Sounds kind of likeable though.

It's very confusing. Reuters reports that an aide to the King says he's made contact, but AP reports a denial.

I think the "unauthorized peace mission" theory may well be the best one -- and if it fails, he just won't return to Afghanistan.
