I find it hard to believe he was only 24 years old when he died. He seemed older.

He seemed older

Given his morbid obesity, I bet he had the internal organs of a 50 year old.

Great stuff. It makes me sad that moments like this will never occur in hip-hop, or American popular music ever again. Biggie and ODB are larger than life.

Whooo I'd like to share these free Biggie mixtapes by J. Period. I like Vol. 2 better than the originals. No idea how this has been available for free for years without copyright issues. Vol. 2 will make Biggie sound new again.

I find it hard to believe that guy made even one video that is a "must see."

Yakuman, the guy was ferociously talented. If it's not your thing, that's fine, but dropping comments like that is less great, in my opinion.

The audio quality of these clips is less than stellar.

Yakuman, I understand you might not like Notorious B.I.G's work. What I don't understand is why you would think anyone else in this thread would be interested in hearing about your opinion.

What moves a person to post, "Your favorite band sucks"?

The Spike Jonez video for "The Sky's the Limit" is a great commentary on the adolescent fantasies that make up most rap videos.

Did you watch any of the linked videos?

I did. As I mentioned above, the sound quality sucks, although BIG's dynamism and charisma is easy to observe and identify with. On the other hand, it's easy to make out the usual n-words and references to bitches and whores that we're supposed to overlook, or enjoy ironically.

What moves a person to post, "Your favorite band sucks"?

It's fun to type?

What I realized is this: All Bands Suck1. That is, all bands are hated by somebody, therefore All Bands Suck.

Now, with that, you now know that Your Favorite Band Sucks, and you can now be proud that you listen to Bands That Suck, and you can be happy and secure that that band you don't like is most certainly a Band That Sucks, and people who listen to them listen to Bands That Suck, just like you do!

So, get on with enjoying your favorite bands, even though I know -- and you now know -- that they suck.

Pardon me, I have a CD of amazing suck I need to listen to now.

1 Yes, that includes The Beatles. It might not, however, include Uncle Tupelo, but it seems they existed in a different part of the multiverse where the laws of physics might be different. Wilco and Sun Volt definitely are here, though, so they definitely are Bands That Suck.

You're doing it wrong. First we need a Tupac thread, then in that thread you big up Tupac and come here and dis Biggie, then someone here shows Biggie love and goes to the Tupac thread and disses him, then you both get flamed in public message boards within months of each other but your trollers are never caught.

I just came to get all pissy about the confusing modifier. It's not Ego Trip's 40th birthday.

Every year as the weather gets warmer and folks drive around blasting their car stereos with the windows down, I miss both Biggie and Tupac.

I could take or leave the Notorious BIG, but the video for "Sky's the Limit" makes me really happy. Apparently it was inspired by Bugsy Malone, which...yeah.

I hadn't seen a lot of this footage, and I enjoyed it. It's really weird that it's been so goddamn long since he was killed.

Metafilter has had a lot of hip hop threads lately, which is awesome. The only downside is that, for me, hip hop is one of the topics that the site--on the whole--does not handle especially well.

Good post though. I miss both BIG and hardcopies of Ego Trip.

I'd love to read a MetaFilter hip-hop thread where some piece of shit doesn't drop in to let us know how lame hip hop is.

Biggie Smalls is the illest.

Has that actually happened in this thread? Not caring for the videos has nothing to do with liking or disliking the work. There are a plenty of bands I like that I would not recommend a single video of.

As for Biggie. I thought his first disc was an instant classic and then the music changed to less than classic. Great voice.

What's easy is to drop glib comments into a thread in a way that only serves to perpetuate anti-black, anti-hip-hop feeling. If you want to critique sexism and/or reappropriation of racist words in hip hop, guess what? This isn't how to do it.
