I kind of like the originals better. Except for maybe Magik. But I love the really grungy comic style look.

The Rocket Raccoon image is so bad ass.

I am proud to say that I own every issue and this tribute is a great idea.

What's with the randomly adding robot limbs to the X-characters?
posted by kafziel at 6:24 PM on June 15, 2012

Oh this is a delight, is this an Offical sanctioned Marvel thing cause I had a blast doing She Hulk a while back.- that whole Strange Tales series was done really well.

I love this so much, I can't even ...

I was the weird kid... I only bought regular comics when there wasn't a new OHotMU hiding somewhere on the rack. Especially cool was OHotMU:Book of the Dead, giving detailed stats and history to dead characters!

Ummm... Yes, I was also the one who bought the complete run of The Punisher Armory. My bad. (I regret nothing!)

Love this. I hope somebody also does the equivalent DCU encyclopedia, whose name I have forgotten in the last 20 years.
posted by immlass at 6:59 PM on June 15, 2012

As Chris Sims often points out, the Punisher: Armory is one of the most insane things ever published as a "comic" - basically a catalog of guns with Frank's musings as to their relative merits over the top, 22 pages a month - how psycho is that?

My follow up would be Punisher: Cattery, in which a retired Frank Castle discusses the relative merits of his various beloved kitties.

The Whelk: is this an Offical sanctioned Marvel thing

It is not. It's being (done? curated? organized?) by Calamity Jon Morris who also helped bring about Relaunched [originally DC Fifty-Too!] as well as Ron Sworschach ["Combining the words of Alan Moore's doomed objectivist vigilante Rorschach with images of Parks and Recreations' lovingly stern libertarian Ron Swanson. Or sometimes maybe the other way around."], Gone and Forgotten, and The Chronological Superman as well as a thousand other small projects.

[disclaimer: I am friends with Jon which is how come I know all the things he does.]

Punisher War Journal:

Microchip was by with the kitten he had promised, it was orange and white rather than red and white. I'll call him Von Ribbentrop to express how disappointed I am in Micro's description.

Punisher War Journal:

Ribbie is too sensitive, I have to protect him from Mittens and Puffy-Poo. I hope once he puts on some weight, he'll hold his own. He prefers part cream, mostly milk. Almost weaned. I'll try him on some minced mobster next week. NOTE: Joking. I don't have time t butcher mobsters for cat-meat.

Punisher War Journal:

Puffy-Poo is too affectionate to be a cat, he must be part dog. I'll see if I can train him to sniff out crack. Ha! Ha! NOTE: I am laughing there. That was a joke.

Punisher War Journal:

Ribbie is very sweet, has almost mastered kitty box training. Mittens is in charge, AS USUAL. A good soldier can lead as well as follow. She brushes my ankles tonight, she never does that, she must have sensed I was shot.

Came by just to tell all the people who don't already know: Rocket Raccoon is the motherfuckin' MAN.

'cept. You know. He's a raccoon and all.

I'm not sure if this makes me a heretic, but I like the way the new X-Men movies have approached their... outfits. As Mojo Nixon says,

Elvis, if you're coming back
You've gotta do it right.
No Vegas, no movies,
Just leather, black and tight.

Not random. Karma lost a leg in New Mutants v.3 #12.

Rocket Raccoon is the craziest, insanest character Bill Mantlo ever created and he was the guy who made a comic based on the worst toy ever, Rom, actually readable.

These were fun, I'd like to see more. The site Covered - also one of Calamity Jon Morris'? - that is linked from OHOTMUredux is pretty nice, too - different artists' takes on preexisting comic cover images, some that are well-known classics, and some more obscure.

Oh man, I just found my old OHOTMU trades in a closet at my parents' house last month. How many hours of my teenage years did I waste reading about third-tier X-men villains from the 1970s?

Well, none, really. What else was I going to do with that time? Talk to girls?
