There really SHOULD be a channel devoted to this.

At first I was all, "what the hell? that's not how you spell a cappella. dammit internet, stop being stupid!"

And then I was all, "yup, that's acrapella, alright".

This one uses instruments, but only one musician.

What can this piece of shit video be?
When I play it, it gives forth a sound
It's got pixels that vibrate and give ... music, not really
What the fuck this thing be that I found?
posted by RobotVoodooPower at 8:27 AM on June 21, 2012 [6 favorites]

If this was a live performance, done by a full a cappella group, it would already have need to be pretty masterfully done order to be enjoyable. As it is...

That said: It absolutely is what it says on the tin. It's sort of like the "shreds" videos, but not at all funny.

Oh....

Why did I watch that?
Why was I laughing at it?
Oh God help me. Please

Did they really have to bother pointing out *which* song was being covered?
posted by obscurator at 9:16 AM on June 21, 2012

hoo boy. Wow, so I love Rush beyond all reason, and my boyfriend's in an a capella group and I was so hoping for a perfect storm of things I love to the point of ridiculousness.

... instead, I am left sort of sad and unhappy and with a bad taste in my ears.

If you only watched for 15 seconds, you didn't even get out of the introduction to the song. When it gets to the real body of the piece is when it gets really acrapelltastic.

Oh, grow out of that attitude. The band did decades ago, time for you to catch up.

Here's a marching band from Michigan playing the same song.
Next, Tom Sawyer.
And another high school marching band from Ohio, playing Spirit of Radio.
The UMass Lowell marching band salutes "The Music of Rush".
A high school marching band from Texas plays a medley (incl. 2112).

Is this a thing? This is not the youtube rabbit hole I expected to go down today.

Is this a thing?

After 40+ years of Rush being a band making music, the band leaders probably grew up listening to Rush and are passing it along to younger generations.

I support this idea. The last few Rush shows I've gone to, I've sometimes seen 3 generations attending the show as one big enthusiastic family group. That's pretty awesome, if you ask me.

Although a cursory glance at the internet suggests that these bands are doing arrangements by the students themselves. I guess that's a great project for an aspiring music student.

Based on the tone of voice, nuance, and unbridled enthusiasm for mouth-guitaring (for lack of a better term) YYZ, I have to imagine that someone somehow planted a microphone near me while I was listening to YYZ through headphones, because this is EXACTLY how it would sound to a listener in the room.

Oh lord metaman, your links are giving me flashbacks to my time playing tenor sax in HS marching band. Memorizing 10 minutes+ of music, with 100+ movement coordinates, and wearing a giant hat with a feather in it... dear lord.

That and my brother was one of the biggest Rush fans ever. He bought a drum kit with his money he made building PCs before he bought a car.

Hey, allow a guy to poke fun at those he loves. I was shimmering with excitement when the new album came out. The Galt joke was just because I was going to listen to it over my lunch break.

That's cool, charred husk. The whole Rand thing gets brought up in every single Rush thread here, and it's kind of a knee jerk reaction with me. We're cool.

(I took the new album in to work earlier this week and played it four times in the warehouse during the work day instead of the death metal CDs that others insist on playing. It was sweet!)

Of the op's link, I'll just say my buddies and I had better vocal drumming chops by the 6th grade.

As for the marching bands, the texas band was good, I'll admit, but was that can-can dancing during the Temples of Syrinx? This dude cannot abide.

For my money, the umass lowell group had far superior interpretation and orchestration--The Camera Eye in less than four minutes and with all its grandeur intact! Thanks, metaman and ericbop.
