Russian Pussy Riot

Pussy Riot is a free-floating (except when jailed) band of punk rockers and activists in Russia. Their punk protest issues include LGBT and gender rights, as well as opposition to Putin and the government. They’re usually anonymous, and they change their assumed and actual names and personnel on a whim. They perform in balaclavas that hide their features, and wear bright-colored tights and plain, skimpy dresses, so anyone can easily don Pussy Riot gear. Hair, makeup, even gender — doesn’t matter. This is not rock star territory. Men can be members of Pussy Riot; so can anyone on the spectrum. They do not perform in clubs or theaters or at music events. Every performance is a guerrilla one. Vice interviews Pussy Riot (before the arrests). Salon reports on the recent detention of three members. Amnesty International page.

Updates are confusing - Moscow Times from 5 days ago says they could go free but Al Jazeera from 3 days ago says denied bail. Reliable news appreciated though.

As a preview of the kind of environment in which they are operating: banal Russian street violence via webcam (contains violence). Would you want to be active in grassroots activism in this kind of place? Respect.

great post except for the last link. I was under the impression we didn't do petitions.

My dad played these guys a lot on his radio until he was told by the radio station management that regardless of Meredith Brooks, it was mysogynistic for women to use the term "bitch" on the radio and he was offending our female listeners.

We might not do petitions (it would make sense), so it is possible the last link should be this one, since I assume Amnesty International links per se are legit, it being a respected NGO and all.

Anonymous: The Rock Band. I know V from Vendetta would approve.
