It's the end of the world as we know it

Project Zomboid, Zombox, Dead State: Indie games and the zombie apocalypse clearly go well together. But what of that classic end of the world, nuclear armageddon? Peter Sahui covers Armageddon Empires - a five year old game with somewhat awkward controls which he insists still holds its own.

I don't know what it is, but something about apocalyptic survival games just gets to me.

Kudos for reminding me that Project Zomboid still existed :)
I downloaded the demo and had too much fun with it (especially suffocating Kate every game, whom was a real deadweight imo).

Now that the game is improved, I much actually just buy it.

I always want to play zombo.com in the background when I see someone playing a zombie shooting game. Especially if the zombie attacks are particularly long and insistent:

"Raar! (slash)"
"WELCOME... to Zombo Com!"
"Grrurgh!"
"Anything is possible at Zombo Com!"
"Fruuagh! (gurgle)"

I saw Dead State and got confused with Zombie State, which is also an indie game. Basically Risk but with zombies harassing you while you try to maintain your borders against your neighbors.

Gah, I inadvertantly plagurized mippy with that joke. All creds are belong to him.

This ones been around for a year or two, so people may have already seen it, but I am obliged to link to Atomic Zombie Smasher. It is a ton of fun.

Oh my gosh, you guys, imagine this: QWOP with zombies.

Oh, sweet. I'll definitely check out Armageddon Empires when I'm at my own computer. $20 is pretty cheap for a game with a lot of re-playability, and supporting indies is always buttloads of good karma. I've backed Dead State, so I'm really looking forward to some interesting gameplay. I'm hoping that there'll be a game version that'll allow a "win", meaning if you've got everything you need to be self-sustaining and protected then you're ok and the zombies rot into goop and you're safe to walk the streets again. I'm not sure which game it was, but it was a no-win scenario that just threw more and harder undead and more crises against you until you died, which I think is pretty *bleah*.
It's not zombies, but still apocalyptic - Wasteland 2. They've just put up an alpha screenshot on their facebook entry here. I've backed that too, as it seems the last few days of the world hold some fascination with me.

You definitely should. The SEKRIT HIDDN MESSIGG of this post is pretty much "try Armageddon Empires". I still play it, after half a decade. I just finished a very tense and satisfying game of it yesterday, in fact. There's a demo as well, BTW.

Ok. Played two games, lost because I need to re-read the rules to memorize them. Basically: my new favorite game, and they've got my $20 for the full version. Thanks Zarkonnen!

Well, they got my $20, plus the $24 for Solium Infernum (in which you are a major demon vying for total control over the Inferno), which was bundled at a 10% discount. There's an eight-part, play-by-play on Rock, Paper, Shotgun which is a good read and might get someone interested. Seems to be lots of rules and management, but who said ruling Hell would be easy? It's even got a Wiki. I which AE did, but oh well. Onwards to try to rule again!
