That is all.

The [more inside] was misleading and unfair!

No harm done, I see. But upon seeing one's pet trapped and struggling, my first impulse would still be to free it rather than record it.

infini, maybe there was a second, smaller dachshund still inside the sleeve.

Aw, I'm glad they finally let him out. And then they gave the poor thing clothing more appropriate for a dog.

Not the same dog, really, but it is a Dachshund.

WIENERDOG! Definitely a few "The spice must flow" screencaps in there.

Sometimes, when I leave a pair of pants on my bed, one of my cats burrows in my pants and ends up slithering down the leg, so I end up with a TUBE! OF! CAT! (The cat can eventually escape on its own, though)

I live in Japan and you can't watch this video here for some reason! Even though it is the mecca for people who love small domestic animals, wtf?!

elizardbits: "seals are just dog mermaids."

This is the truest and best thing anyone has ever said.

I know that corgis tend to get more love in here, but it's dachshunds that are actually the best.

I'm claustrophobic.

This nightmare video of a trapped canine and his sadistic tormentors has shown me depths of human depravity that previously I only heard about through whispers and pamphlets.

That would have been a lot more impressive if, instead of a paw, a tentacle had come out to swat at the bauble.

My favorite type of dog. I love how as soon as he gets free he wiggles then goes for his butt.

My dog (a yorkie/westie corss) used to do this occasionally. It is quite hilarious, but he hasn't done it in quite some time. Not since I owned a camera/phone that could take halfway decent videos, any way. Also, I don't really leave my laundry lying out any more.

(he also walks exactly the same way in boots, as the dachsund from maudlin's video)

Dachshunds were originally bread to hunt badgers in their confined underground dens (hence the German name for badger dog), so it's not too much of a stretch to see why they might like being in a tight space. My dachshund loved to be in enclosed spaces, to the point of begging to be wrapped up in blankets when sitting on the sofa.

Guys, the results are back from the lab and this is the best dog-wearing-shoes video.

Also, our household's contribution to the genre.

(1) Just because it's wagging doesn't mean it's happy. Different wags can mean different things.

(2) That said, until recently I was a proud dog owner, and I would crack the hell up any time my dog did something like that. Bring on the recorder.

(3) I know they say pets aren't practice for children but given the reactions in these threads to "lol look at this animal doing something funny" and "lol look at this child do something funny" the answers are always split between "lol" and "you're cruel and inhumane for recording that while it happens" and regardless of the subject, animal or human, I *always* fall on the "lol" side of things. So since as a dogowner my first instinct is always to pull out the video camera, I think it's going to be the same for me as a parent.

I know they say pets aren't practice for children

To me it's like having children is running a marathon and having a dog is like running a 5k. The 5k isn't really a good practice for a marathon but if you can't run (or can barely run) a 5k, you almost certainly cannot run a marathon.

In the case of both children and dogs, sometimes they do funny things, sometimes you do funny things to them. As long as they aren't any long-term negative consequences, you're the one in charge so have fun!

Lots of dogs wag their tales when they are anxious. I think this is one of them. You can kind of tell how the doggy is feeling when the brute, I mean, owner tucks back the sleeve on the little face where it was obstructing doggy's eye. He kind of "plays possum," just wanting whatever is happening to be over. And I think they put him in the sleeve in the first place! :(
posted by thinkpiece at 10:15 AM on July 26, 2012

You people who think the people stuffed the dog in the sleeve are missing an important point: dachshunds were bred to hunt burrowing animals like badgers (hence the name) and are notorious burrowers themselves. Many dachshund owners find that their dogs prefer sleeping bags to traditional dog beds.

My own mutt likes to curl up with me as I read in bed at night. She gets under the covers the normal way at the top of the bed but when she's ready to leave she burrows to the foot of the bed and jumps down from there. If there is a reason for this, I have yet to figure it out.

tl;dr: some dogs stuff their own selves in sleeves

Opposite dog: Kitty loves bathtime!
posted by ceribus peribus at 2:02 PM on July 26, 2012

When I got my first apartment, we also got our first kitties! Since there were a bunch of boxes lying around, a taped like 5 of them together, cutting out doors and connecting them to make a Kitty Palace. I also added windows, for their viewing pleasure. But kitties don't understand the difference between doors and windows, so my large cat tried to defenestrate himself. His hips were too big, and he got stuck. And since it was a window, it was a bit far off the ground, and his hind legs were too high up to reach the floor. So he used his claws to grip the carpet and started pulling, dragging along the Kitty Palace with him. He was able to free himself, and all of the windows were converted to doors.

The moral of the story: Kitties are hilarious.

When my Herman was a tiny pup, he would get an empty toilet paper roll stuck around his snout from digging in the trash and he would run around the house, bonking it on the floor.

Bonk! Bonk! Bonk! (eventually it would pop off, he would bark aggressively twice and then run backwards violently, usually until he bumped into something and scared the shit out of himself.)

I never recorded that, but I also wondered if it wasn't the best training ever for him to avoid eating toilet paper as an adult.

Okay, this video features not only dachshunds, but a laughing baby, and is therefore highly concentrated cute.

This one of a dachshund chasing a crab on a beach comes a close second.
