The Oxford English Dictionary dates the ejaculation back to the 1950s.

I saw Castellaneta at a Los Angeles museum event once. I didn't approach him. But I if I had, I imagine I would have been the first person to request, rather than a Homer-ism, Krusty saying "Uhh... that brisket ain't sitting right."

Play-Doh is from the 1950s, too.

Castellaneta doesn't get enough credit sometimes. But I think it's natural that after 20 years of the Simpsons, one would take such talents for granted. He's not just Homer, he's Krusty, Quimby, Abe, Barney, Grampa, to name a few. And each voice is different and original in its own way.

I personally forgot how talented he was until I actually saw an episode of Futurama where he guest voiced the Robot Devil. Again, a completely different persona - I never would have suspected it was him had I not checked out the credits at the end.

Best memory was when most of the voice cast did a show where they sat on stage and did a reading of the episode where Homer gets a gun. It was so surreal to watch these humans sound like our favourite family.

Then a few people got to ask their questions, and eventually people started to ask if one of the characters could say X, Y and Z. Probably the best request was someone who asked Homer to say "Mmmmm.... Canadian beer".

I probably wouldn't ask Castellaneta to say anything either, out of respect - I figure he gets harassed enough and after all this time, he's probably sick of it. I would probably just shake his hand uncontrollably or maybe start weeping loudly or hug the man.

I think it owes a great deal to Harold Peary, as well, though there is a long, long history of exasperated fat men making loud noises centered around the rotund frustrated onomatopoeia of "Oh!"

Not that I feel personally connected to such a notion, of course.

I (re)watched Super 8 last night on Netflix Instant. Castellaneta is in it, briefly, and he is so physically nondescript I couldn't place him, even though his voice was screamingly familiar. I finally had to look it up and then I kicked myself around the house for a while for not being able to figure it out unaided. And it's funny - the voice he uses in the movie is not his 'regular' speaking voice, exactly, but it is certainly not a Simpsons voice either, but still super-familiar.

Heck of an instrument that guy has.

Is Dan Castellaneta the Mel Blanc of his generation?

Is Dan Castellaneta the Mel Blanc of his generation?

That's a good question, I think he is. He could certainly lay legitimate claim to the title. Who else would be in contention? Billy West? Tom Kenny? The rest of the Simpsons cast?

He's our generation's Mel Blanc (lite).

I've met two celebs I admired, and I simply said, "Thank you for your work." Got a quiet, shy "oh, thk you very mch" from Robin Williams, and a hearty, handshaking "You're welcome!" from Harvey Keitel. I figure it's minimally intrusive, but I did want to say "you've made a personal impact".

(I mean, he's voiced these characters in just The Simpsons, not counting all his other work....)
