Please know that I will favorite any video that has a dog in it (assuming the dog is not named Cujo).

I figure it went like this.

God created Man, then he created Women, then he created apples and snakes, then he created politicians , then he created spiders and rattlesnakes, then he created quicksand, deserts, and brussel sprouts..

Then he felt really guilty about most of that and gave us dogs to make up for it.

Came to share the cabbage stealing video availablelight linked to. Maymo is a dog who knows how to frame a scene.

Dog-shaming, as a conception, is a pernicious and awful thing. Shame is an obnoxious enough thing without our trying to spread it to other species which are happily innocent of it. Yes, even as a joke. Some things shouldn't be joked about.

But as with all terrible things that involve incredibly cute pictures and videos of wonderful dogs, dog-shaming will probably continue, because it is absolutely impossible to be properly stern and disapproving in the face of someone as awesome as Maymo.

Of course, there are no bad dogs.

And....there lies the conflict... there are dogs that chew up your shoes, tear the molding off the door they want to get through, eat the GPS when you leave them in the car at the grocery store, terrorize the cats because they want to play with them, dogs that learn how to open the 'fridge and eat all the bacon... and so on...

but...then they jump on the bed on a cold night and lay down next to you.... they bring you your shoes because they found them in the middle of the floor, and they lay and watch you when you're not feeling well.....

Are there naughty dogs....sure...but "bad" dogs...nope....

I just came back from a stroll where I'd found a dog's bloody collar. I called the number on the tag and found a distraught owner on the other end. She'd been taken by a coyote a half an hour before, while squatting a a mere two feet from her former master. It was sheer luck that I found the collar while strolling in the dark.

Coyote populations are high right now. If you have a dog this size and live in coyote country be extra cautious while walking them. Try to keep them on a sturdy leash, and don't take them far after dusk.

The Doggington Post - Your Source for Everything Dog - feels the same way as you! That's why they came up with "Dog Celebrating!" instead of mean old "Dog Shaming."

Somehow, though, it just didn't have quite the same edge.

You could try shaming the shamers. Make them sit around for photography sessions with pieces of cabbage on their heads or something. It could usher in a new era of metashame!

Of course, then someone would have to begin metashaming the metashamers, and it would get unreal fast.

On the other hand, that dog did steal food from an incarcerated goat. That's pretty bad behavior. Maybe a little contrition would be nice.

Thanks, my face was starting to hurt from all the smiling at Maymo videos.

Maymo's cute. I wouldn't be able to get my beagle to sit still long enough to film her with any shaming-signs.

I read the whole phenomenon as mocking of the idea of shame itself. The attempt to shame dogs, who cannot be shamed, as a joke, is a way of pointing out the inherent absurdity in shaming people.

I don't know if it's a critique of shaming people so much as a celebration of the animal kingdom's freedom from shame. "Shaming" a dog is just another way of laughing at how delightfully shameless dogs are.

Dogs do feel shame, and they feel bad when you reprimand them, and even as a cat person I am not down with punishing them as a form of entertainment.
posted by yath at 11:40 AM on October 10, 2012

Shame is bad only in the sense that fire is bad. When out of control, it destroys homes and lives; properly harnessed and used, it runs the engines of civilization. Dogs, happily, have no idea what shame is, or what civilization is. That is, in a way, why we need them.

What makes you think the dogs are being punished? If you're referring to Maymo, he's being filmed while being "naughty"; as far as he knows, he's getting away with it - SCORE!

As for the internet meme of dogs being "shamed" with signs... They can't actually read the signs.

I would also like to take this opportunity to raise consciousness about the horrible practice of "bonzai catting" I just read about on the internet.
