A chat with Mark Eitzel and Neil Hamburger

Mope-rock titan Mark Eitzel (former frontman of American Music Club) gets some constructive criticism of his excellent new LP Don't Be A Stranger from "America's $1 Funnyman" Neil Hamburger. This is the sixth video of Eitzel's Life Lessons video series where he solicits career advice. After having a reformed AMC crumble after two great albums last decade, as well as suffering a heart attack in 2011, it's a treat to see Eitzel's fit and working again.

Love this dude's voice. His eyebrows need work though. Neil should have given him some grooming tips.

I believe Billy B was the consultant on his looks- that was one of my favorites. Although the Drew Droege and the Nadya Ginsberg ones were fantastic.

Mark previously mentioned Neil Hamburger in his cover of Kris Kristofferson's "Help Me Make It Through The Night", touting his wizardry with the one-liners.

"Who's playing Friday night? CANCEL IT! Neil Hamburger's in town!"

I saw Eitzel play solo in a tiny London club, some time in the late nineties/early noughties. He was pretty good, but what I mainly remember was that he saw off almost three bottles of red wine during the show. Man after my own heart, I thought, if a bit of a lightweight.

The new record is GREAT.

My long-time musical partner in crime is going to be the pianist (and only other person on stage with Mark, I believe) on his upcoming tour. People will not be disappointed.

Mark Eitzel is cool and he has a great sense of humor.

Holy smokes, that's very cool. I've listened to the new LP about 50 times and it's my favorite solo Eitzel since 60 Watt Silver Lining.

On the strength of Don't Be A Stranger I'm tempted to hit the Bay Area in early November for the start of his tour (a 600-mile round trip from my home base in Humboldt County.) Mark - come play up here! I'll feed and house you & your band.

Here's hoping Mark's recording these shows for a future release.

Been a fan of his since his AMC days. And next month my band is opening for him in Baltimore. Very psyched for that.

Very jealous for those of you going to see him next month.
