My wife told me that on a third grade field trip the other day, my daughter turned to the girl next to her and said, "Have you ever listened to They Might Be Giants?"

I've never been prouder.

For the full effect, all those clips need to split into their own YouTube videos that come up randomly during a shuffle.

As each clip came up I was like, "this is the cleverest use of the song/clip" then, "no, wait! this is". I think overall my favorite one is this clip at the 1:52 mark

Although what's that blue thing, doing here is a strong contender for second place.
posted by Deathalicious at 8:09 PM on October 31, 2012

The two that made me laugh so hard I had to pause the video were "What's that blue thing doing here" and "Something grabbed a hold of my hand."
posted by roll truck roll at 8:20 PM on October 31, 2012 [1 favorite]

'What's that blue thing doing here' is easily the best. I will fight anyone who says otherwise.

This has brightened an otherwise lousy day. Thank you, Deathalicious.

Saw TMBG a few months ago...and they did Fingertips. The whole thing. I was so proud of them guys.

Oh my god. I laughed so hard I cried and upset the dogs. I think I really started to lose it on "Leave me alone leave me alone."

This is even more confusing if you've never heard Fingertips before. Still great though.

What key? What key?

(sorry, wrong Fingertips)

My only complaint is that I didn't get to hear "space suit" at the end (though I don't know what they could have done with that song)

It's worth pointing out that a certain amount of TMBG's discography (the 123s/ABCs/Science kids albums) is also owned by Disney, just like Star Wars is now. Of course, "Fingertips" is still in the hands of Warner/Elektra. BUT FOR HOW LONG?

I also wouldn't mind if somebody made a 42-minute supercut montage along these lines with The Residents' Commercial Album.

That was great, except that every time someone even mentions TMBG I think about how every year when I unpack the stuff that goes outside in the springtime I find the little ornamental birdhouse that hangs over the shed and it reminds me of that little birdhouse in your soul song and it ends up getting stuck in my head all. fucking. day.

not to put too fine a line on it, say I'm the only bee in your bonnet . . . just shoot me now

Birdhouse. It took me twenty damn years before I realized that because the narrator of the song is a nightlight, the "picture opposite me of my primitive ancestry" is a picture of a lighthouse. I guess when you're a kid you don't think too hard about the lyrics.

On the other hand, I'm pretty sure there isn't anything that would fly over a kid's head in Fingertips.

Right around "Blue Thing" I had to conclude that these songs were written ABOUT Star Wars. That's the only possible explanation.

The first time I heard a live version of 'I walk along darkened corridors' I died. Turns out it's the greatest rock anthem ever written. Whodathunk?

TMBG just posted this on their Facebook page about twenty minutes ago. We got something big here!

The funny thing is that as far as I know, they never did Fingertips live until sometime around 2005. Now, the epic, draw-out version of "darkened corridors" is a major staple of their shows.

I came in here hoping it did what it said on the tin. To my unimaginable delight, IT DOES WHAT IT SAYS ON THE TIN!

The music is so disjointed and all over the place, so this made for a very jarring experience of little cohesion for me.

I know it is not listed as part of Fingertips, but how could this not include Space Suit - the lovely, sane, grounding salve that blows in after fingertips, and would mix so nicely with any number of atmospheric Star Wars scenes?
posted by dirtdirt at 11:05 AM on November 1, 2012 [2 favorites]

I always hoped TMBG would play individual bits of Fingertips at random in concert between other full-length songs, like listening to Apollo 18 on shuffle.

Which is how I always assumed they were intended to be heard.

I wonder how many people thought it was a teaser for the next TMBG album, Fingertips?

Major demerits for not using Ep. IV's "blue milk" for "Please Pass the Milk Please"

roll truck roll, I saw them perform Fingertips live in 2001. I don't know when they started doing it.

What blew me away was that they could nail it. I always assumed Fingertips would just be a studio thing, but I guess Linnell is pretty damn good at changing settings on his keyboards.

Oh, they didn't play Spacesuit after Fingertips, but instead just jammed Darkened Corridors out for like 10 minutes.
