It's a God Awful Small Affair

It's sounding like the Mars Rover has found something interesting "This data is gonna be one for the history books. It's looking really good," said John Grotzinger, the principal investigator for the rover mission.

Grotzinger says it will take several weeks before he and his team are ready to talk about their latest finding.

This story was such a tease. Why even publish it?

NASA never learns. If they didn't want to publicize their findings before being sure, they shouldn't publicize the possibility their findings are exciting before being sure either. They don't seem to understand that in the pop-sci media, these two are the same thing.

Grotzinger says they recently put a soil sample in SAM, and the analysis shows something earthshaking. "This data is gonna be one for the history books. It's looking really good," he says.

Grotzinger can see the pained look on my face as I wait, hoping he'll tell me what the heck he's found, but he's not providing any more information.

Why tell them anything then? Stupid.

I bet John Grotzinger now deeply regrets saying these two sentences out loud.

Eh, what's the harm? At least it gets people talking about science.
