I was born with a disfigurement

Shane Carruth has released a trailer for Upstream Color, his long awaited follow up to Primer. The film's synopsis is given as:
A man and woman are drawn together, entangled in the lifecycle of an ageless organism. Identity becomes an illusion as they struggle to assemble the loose fragments of wrecked lives.
It premiers at Sundance (via)

Malick Lite?

Kidding - this looks interesting.

What happened to Topiary?

Color me giddy. Can't wait.

As far as A Topiary goes, translating that screenplay to film is going to require many, many millions of dollars in VFX shots. My sense is that Upstream Color is meant as a calling card to show that Carruth can handle the reins of a more traditionally-made film than the $7000-ish Primer.

Malick Lite?

I know you were kidding, but Malick Lite sounds ideal to me.

This looks good too. Though I can't think of a recent filmmaker when I was so nervous because I was so invested in them doing well (based solely on their original project and not knowing that much about him beyond it) -- so I'm also weirdly nervous.

Oddly enough, this reminds me of an episode of the X-Files. If it turns out that the characters are living in a hallucination brought on by a giant fungus that is slowly digesting them, I demand bragging rights.

From the trailer, it looks like this movie attacks horror the same way Primer attacked science fiction.

I can only hope.

Primer came out so long ago that it doesn't even seem like science fiction anymore. With the new edit window, we can all make short trips back through time to fix earlier mistakes!

Also, I have figured out a way to travel back through MetaFilter time indefinitely, by carrying an edit window through my edit window. MeMail me for details. Must bring your own weapons. Safety not guaranteed. I have only done this once before.

At this rate he will produce two more amazing movies in his lifetime. He's sort of the Ted Chiang of movies. Or Ted Chiang is the Shane Carruth of science fiction.

Better quality trailers at apple.com, not that there's a ton to see. :)

Can't wait though, Primer was great!

Oh man I'm super excited for this.

The film could well suck, but that's an amazing trailer.

I'd call this a teaser, not a trailer. It's a good one.

A narrative somewhat simpler than Primer on the first viewing would be appreciated, Mr Carruth.

I love the sound design alone.

nathancaswell: "I'd call this a teaser, not a trailer. It's a good one."

I almost made this post a few days ago when the movie was announced, glad that I waited until at least this little teaser came out. I can't wait for this myself; I've watched Primer a dozen times at least.

Did anyone else read the first line of the quote in the post as, "A man and woman are drawn together, entangled in the lifecycle of an ageless orgasm" and snap to attention?

Buddy of mine showed me Primer a bit back. Started me off with "Ok, this is kind of a weird film, Smed. But it's got time travel in it, so you'll love it."

About the time Aaron gets the second cell phone call and says "I think we broke symmetry" and the camera cuts to Abe the movie freezes (glitch).

So we're looking at Abe for about a minute frozen on screen.
I said: "So, uh, this part of the film?"
Because y'know, if we were watching Big Momma's House 3 some schmutz on the DVD wouldn't have been mistaken for inflicting irrevocable damage on the spacetime continuum.

I've watched it about 25 times since then (Primer, I mean).

I anticipate the same delightful level of confusion on this one.
You hear a line like: 'I must apologize .... my head is made of the same material as the sun', yeah, worth strapping in for. It's not going to a (strangely more common) film centered around a black man in a dress.

I'd swear he stole that last low note that sounds in the trailer from the Close Encounters Of The Third Kind OST or even from the movie. It's one of the really really low notes sounded either by the mothership or the Moog talking to it.

I'm terrified that Caruth might go the way of M. Night. Primer set the bar really high.

Most of the trailer suggests something as awesome as Videodrome.
But that opening line suggests something more like After Last Season.
I hope it lands somewhere in the Videodrome half of the spectrum.

Perhaps 'tackle' would be a better word then? I mean, Primer always seemed to me to be a very pure expression of the science-fiction aesthetic; the characters are only sketches, the plot is paper-thin, and the entire movie revolves around a single extrapolation. - a 2-hour examination of a single what-if question, with just enough of a veneer of fiction over it to be palatable.

What I'm trying to say is that I am hoping that this work will be to Saw and Wes Craven's Scream as Primer is to Star Wars and Star Trek and (yes, I'll go there) 2001.

Woohoo! I'm looking forward to this.

[Also, if you want a 'Malick Lite' horror film (well, Badlands with vampires, by way of The Road), you could do worse than Jim Mickle's Stake Land.]

I've been waiting for so long now that I forgot that I was waiting, and what I was waiting for. But there was that uneasy feeling, like a very slight itch inside my brain, which did the waiting, and the forgetting of the waiting, and the subconscious calculation of lifetime left versus likelihood of itch getting scratched. So now you haul all this up into consciousness only to say it is not yet?????? Not yet?????? Coming but not yet????? Aarrrrrggghhhhhhh!!!!

So looking forward to this movie, Primer was a serious mind-fuck.
