In the past week, this video by Yasha Swag has gotten nearly 10 million views. What is making it so popular? It's about pickles. [slyt]

Soooo glad no one will ever see the music video I made for Nine Inch Nails's "Closer" when I was fifteen. At least Yasha wrote his own song to go with... right?

You know how when you're in your 20s and you sort of naively assume that when you get older you'll be able to hang on to That Which Makes You Cool and so you keep assuming that you are Still Cool well into your 30s and then there's that moment where you failed and you are officially Uncool because you do not understand what the FUCK is the appeal of the latest teen zeitgeist?

This video was that moment for me.

Ten million views? Who are these people?

We are the people our parents warned us about.

It's even more depressing when you realize those millions of views are probably teen girls who are "too cool for bieber."

Evidently not the first time people wondered why something that is pretty much crap (IMHO based on 10 seconds which was all I could stand) can go viral...this guy has been around this block before.

I'm choosing to believe that most of the thumbs up, which only just outweigh the thumbs down, were offered ironically.

How do you prove you're the best at black hatted SEO? You get millions of views for you own terrible youtube videos.

I really like the idea of black hats competing to force the most ridiculous memes.

Wow. How the hell do they manage that? Is it any similar to the "gold farming" in online games like they used(?) to do in China? Or more like via botnets?

I think it's more like those late 90's advertising portals that would pay you to watch ads, and people quickly made software to fake clicks, or randomize mouse movements so it looked like you were still watching. Only writ large.

He throws enough fake hits at the video via proxies, and likes via throwaway youtube accounts, and eventually somebody like buzzfeed or daily what will pick up the video with a "WTF is this so popular" headline and then it goes from there. And, as we can now tell, he's tried this a few times. This is the one that's really taken off.
