I have heard (via MetaFilter? dunno -- can't find it) that the Japanese answer the phone, "Moshi-moshi" to prove that they are not some kind of crazy fox trying to trick you, the caller. (Japanese foxes, apparently, cannot pronounce "moshi-moshi".)
