"1893. The World's Columbian Exposition - a gathering of the greatest technological feats the world had ever seen. But one exhibit stood out above the rest - the floating city of Columbia."

This post was deleted for the following reason: Maybe a bummer if the video is neat and there's no reliable alternate source, but if it requires a youtube signup to view it's probably not really workable as a single-link post. -- cortex

So...not really even a little bit like Icarus but they figured no one would get it if they called it "A Modern Day Laputa"?

It's a little embarrassing how excited I am about this game. Will probably take a week's vacation starting with launch date.

I thought login-required links were a no go.

Let's say I never play video games at all, but I have a fixation on the Colombian Exposition and liked the video. Can someone briefly tell me the context/origin?

The cheesy 1970s documentary series style complete with cheap-ass music library score is well done; very In Search Of. The narrator is pitch-perfect, too (unless you think he should be doing a Nimoy impression, which I don't -- it would be way too specific a reference).

Columbia is a floating city from the upcoming game Bioshock Infinite; the premise is that this city was founded at the height of American nationalism and its extreme patriotism (and xenophobia, and militarism, and...) causes it to secede from America and become its own independent nation.

The player is a former member of the Pinkerton Agency tasked with retrieving a young woman with the ability to open rifts in time from the floating city, but Not Everything May Be As It Seems.

(That's about as brief as I can make it without just linking here. Like its predecessors, the game uses science fiction and alternate history to explore real-world social and philosophical issues.)

DirtyOldTown - a lot more information is available via the pretty good Wikipedia page on the game.

It is noted there that the Exposition and themes of American Exceptionalism are major influences on the game.
