Yo La Tengo Live on WFMU -- 2013 All-Request Marathon Thurs 3/14 at 9am
March 13, 2013 8:35 PM   Subscribe

Yo La Tengo are once again playing requests for pledges on WFMU, beginning at 9am(!) US EDT on Thursday morning March 14. Every year, Yo La Tengo perform requests live on-air in exchange for pledges, to help keep freeform noncommercial radio station WFMU (91.1 FM in Jersey City, NJ) on the air. This year is no exception, even though this year's broadcast will be aired live from Berlin, Germany, where the band is currently on tour. This year's set will begin at about 9am US EDT on Thursday morning March 14. Yo La Tengo will play listener requests for several hours.

Oh maaaaan ... OK, I'll get up. Just for them.

It's certainly going to have a different vibe this year, with requests inspired by coffee more prevalent than those inspired by beer. Although I suppose there'd be a decent mix of both at any time of day among 'fmu listeners.

Obligations (meetings and meetings!) keep me from putting this on as work music today. Oh well.

Aw, they don't know "Don't Feel Like Dancin'" by Scissor Sisters.

The Eno cover right now is wonderful. Somehow that makes a lot of sense that ylt would cover Eno well.

If you'd like your setlist with an animated sketch of the band, it's also being updated on the show's blog.

Grrr! Maudit clients -- I missed Eno, too. I have to go into a meeting shortly. Thanks for holding down the fort, y'all.

Eno was my request! BTW I had to cheat, and peak at the "official" set list on Google Docs to identify the Hypnolovewheel track. (They've never had an "official" set list before).

Thanks, trashflow! What I could hear of the sets sounded great, but clients and the sleep thing made me miss a lot.

wenestvedt, a few unofficial recordings have popped up in previous years, but nothing official. Check YouTube, Hype Machine and the usual places soon.

After comparing notes with Ira Kaplan, I now have a complete and corrected setlist from yesterday's Yo La Tengo all-request performance on WFMU. Here it is:

-------------------------------------------------------------
Yo La Tengo - WFMU All-Request Marathon
March 14, 2013
Berlin, Germany

The Beatles - Dig A Pony
Marvin Gaye/Gladys Knight (Barrett-Strong) - I Heard It Through The Grapevine (attributed by Ira to Gladys Knight)
Chris Knox - Not Given Lightly
The Sonics - Psycho

Leo Sayer - You Make Me Feel Like Dancing
XTC - Life Begins At The Hop
Eno & The Winkies - I'll Come Running (To Tie Your Shoes) (my request)
The Kinks - Better Things

Chris Bell - You And Your Sister
ZZ Top - La Grange
Hypnolovewheel - What's Going On
Velvet Underground - Venus In Furs
Blue Öyster Cult - Godzilla

NRBQ - Ridin' In My Car
Ten Years After - I'd Love To Change The World (dedicated to Alvin Lee, 19 Dec 1944 – 6 March 2013)
Desmond Dekker - Israelites (Intensified medley)
Boredoms - Acid Police
David Bowie – Heroes (Tara Key’s request)

Richard & Linda Thompson - I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight
The Kinks - This Time Tomorrow
Neil Diamond - Thank the Lord For The Night Time
Drifters / Dion & The Belmonts / Beach Boys (Leiber/Stoller) - Ruby Baby
The Who - Disguises

Hüsker Dü - Pink Turns To Blue
Can - Yoo Doo Right (Medley: Pere Ubu - Heart of Darkness, Superchunk - Driveway to Driveway, DEVO - Be Stiff, ? & The Mysterians - 96 Tears, Heartbreakers - I Wanna Be Loved, Nilsson - Gotta Get Up, Ramones- I Wanna Be Well, Nena - 99 Luftballons, Journey - Midnight Train/Don't Stop Believing, ELO - Telephone Line, The Smiths - This Charming Man, The Damned - New Rose, Bob & Doug MacKenzie w/ Geddy Lee - Take Off (To The Great White North), Neutral Milk Hotel - In The Aeroplane Over The Sea, Pixies - This Monkey's Gone To Heaven, Michael Jackson - Man in the Mirror, Nazz - Open My Eyes, The Smiths - Ask, Paul Simon - Red Rubber Ball, The Cyrkle - Red Rubber Ball, Rush - Fly By Night, Michael Bolton - How Can We Be Lovers, Interpol - Leif Erickson).

Highlights IMHO: David Bowie - Heroes, Sonics - Psycho, Hypnolovewheel - What's Going On, The Kinks - Better Things, and of course my request: Eno & The Winkies - I'll Come Running (Totaled)

Bonus points: Ira made a good-faith effort to sing at least the chorus of "Komm, Gib Mir Deine Hand" in the (un)original German!

Shout outs to guests Martin Wenk--vocals on 99 Luftballoons, bells on Ridin' in My Car and occasional percussion; Schneider TM's horn solo during the medley; and Abe Davis, handclaps on I Wanna Hold Your Hand.

Nice work, trashflow. I agree with your highlights, and add that I rather liked "Godzilla" too. It was a fun show, but I hope they'll be back to their regular slot next year -- I am not cut out to listen to morning radio show hosts for three hour stretches.

Thanks for the detailed setlist, trashflow. I still haven't had a chance to give it a proper listen, but
even before listening I was looking forward to Heroes and Better Things. Glad to hear they did a good job with those. I grabbed a copy of the stream - if anyone wants it send me a mefi-mail and I'll send you the file.
