Reggie Watts clarifies.

This is obviously some strange use of the word "clarify" that I wasn't previously aware of.

Thanks to his informative flowchart for determining whether you are fucking, many people can now truthfully answer that they just had sex.

You know who I want to be friends with?

Yeah, Reggie Watts, obvs. But besides him? The woman who phones Reggie up to ask in a sing-songy voice if she's fucking. She seems like a lot of fun.

Has there ever been a more fun human in the history of the species than Reggie Watts?

Sorry I made it to about 3:30 on this before I bailed out. I love Reggie Watts but I was done with this a lot quicker than he was. (does that mean I was fucking?)

I was once trying to make my way through a tightly packed crowd, and as I turned to my left, something that felt like a cloud made of angel wings brushed my shoulder, and I realized I was standing next to and a little behind Reggie Watts.

We probably weren't fucking. Probably.

No, I have never wondered that, but then I reckon I've spent more time not fucking than most people. I'm pretty aware of when I'm fucking, 'cause usually there was several months and a few grand spent in prep.

Previously, I have confused Reggie Watts with (former Green Bay Packer and noted homophobe) Reggie White when I read Watts's name. My life was much clearer when I realized this error.

Reggie Watts just did an Ask Me Anything at reddit, and it was fun.

I have seen him perform live a handful of times, and it has always been a blast. The man is sexy.
posted by Doroteo Arango II at 2:16 PM on April 10, 2013 [2 favorites]

And that explains. The man is so sexy that when you go to one of his shows you are not 100% that you are or are not fucking.

He must get asked the question a lot.

So tempted to edit instead of posting a second comment after I hit post too soon

Actually, I was kind of drunk when I saw Reggie Watts play a very small club (maybe 100 people in a small room). I started to cry at the end of his set, he was so awesome. I also met the Flaming Lips, who were also in town and just showed up. Can you believe it.

It's really sad to see such a talented person like Watts become famous and start producing such commercial pop radio drivel. It's like he wants to be the soundtrack to a GMC truck commercial.

no really Reggie is like a human nitrous tank.

God, his TED talk is mindblowingly good. He's like a bridge between sanity and insanity. I'm constantly going back and forth between "Watts is an annoying one trick novelty act that will one day wear thin" and "He's the greatest, most important artist of our generation." I'm leaning toward greatest artist of our generation.

I watched the whole thing and fail to see the magic. At the risk of being overly literal, can anyone explain to me what they love about it (other than rapping in German, in which case I prefer 1982's Der Komissar.)

I think it's important to note that Watts makes up many of the "samples" himself, on the spot, with his mouth/vocal chords/whatever and creates loops. Many of his lyrics are also free-flowing, made up right on the spot.

I don't think video does Watts justice - he has to be seen to be believed.

Saw Reggie perform a couple of times in the late 90's when he was doing gigs in small bars and he was the lead singer in a funk cover band. I always look forward to the work he produces. If anyone is interested he started a YouTube channel with Sara Silverman, Michael Cera, and Tim & Eric called Jash

Well, that dance troupe is pretty fantastic.

Also it is funny.

Well, that's the part I don't get. I like absurdity, Monty Python, Arj Barker, etc. This just feels like poorly targeted satire of -- what? Advice columnists? Call in talk shows? Dan Savage? It's not like the chorus has any meaning, or the basic concept.

he has talented backup dancers, and I'm sure it was super fun for him to run around and be "crazy" doing humping motions, but....

Watts makes up many of the "samples" himself, on the spot, with his mouth/vocal chords/whatever and creates loops. Many of his lyrics are also free-flowing, made up right on the spot.

Those are both very cool. Maybe this is not his best work? I'm getting a vibe of "seems amazing if you're really stoned, not so much when sober." Vs. Barker and Python, stoner favorites that hold up elsetimes too.

I don't know what else to say but the guy is super talented, and is an artist, not a pop act that struggles to put out an album every two years. He's living it and you can too while you watch and listen.

I just liked the beat and the silliness of it. Also the dancers.

On the surface, I like the beat (reminds me of Mr. Oizo), it's catchy, the dancing is good, and Reggie just comes across as very uninhabited and not giving a fuck. He's a guy I would enjoy having a beer with.

If you look a little deeper, I think it's a stab at people who over think a plate of sex beans. Besides the lyrics alone (seriously, listen to them, especially the ones that aren't the main chorus), follow the story of the "scientists." They're doing all sorts of tests and studies but at the end they still can't conclusively determine if it's fucking or not because it's something "you have to feel." And did you notice the couple that was politely courting each other in the beginning but then ended up fucking at the end? Some other dancers tell a story and I will admit that I wish he had included scenes of solely male dancers simulating fucking. 3:06 was my favorite bit because who else other than Reggie would simulate masturbating and accidentally getting it all over his face and in his mouth?

No reference to Watts is complete without a pointer to his other career as a straight musician in the band Maktub. Their work is also worth your time.

I mainly like his hair. And the gleeful silliness. Yes. Those things.

OK, I saw Reggie Watts live last night (as the top headliner at the huge Bridgetown Comedy Festival in Portland.) No A/V stuff at all, no looping, video, or even background music. Pretty much straight standup comedy, along with an a capella song written for the occasion (it was all about the damp Portland environment.) Nothing remotely like the clip linked here, or Fuck Shit Stack.

To my surprise, he came off as a blunt NYC tough guy (despite his look), more Robert De Niro in Taxi Driver (or Dave Attel) than psychedelic goofball. The song was of a different character, surprisingly melodic and beautifully sung, with clever words. The rest of was like

"Why does every body love babies? I've survived to this age. What the fuck has a baby ever done? NUTHIN."

and a long riff about "Portland's not Philadelphia. There's been a long running argument about this since the early 1900s. But there are basically five differences. Numbuh one. Geography. This seems obvious. But not everybody sees it this way. ..." all the way through "Numbuh Five. Fuck you. It's not Philadelphia. It just isn't. I don't even know why we're discussing this."

I'm not doing his set justice, but long story short, not anything like I expected, and very funny. I'm completely won over. (I still think Maktub's lame though.)

Watts' performance was part of the "Put Your Hands Together" show by Carmen Esposito, and was recorded for her podcast of that name. It's not up yet, but should be available for free at https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/put-your-hands-together-cameron/id593136300 any day now.
