Keita's Quick Ideas. In 2011, Keita Takahashi, designer of Katamari Damacy, joined the team of the unconventional MMO game Glitch (previously), which had to close its doors last year. The Glitch people have since published 200 of Keita's ideas for the game.

I like a lot of these ideas - they all seem very fun, and would be pleasant surprises if I came across them in an online game.

Was glitch any good? I never got a chance to play it.

Glitch was very good. It was imaginative and had a lot of hidden depth and interaction.

It was offputtingly hard to explain to others.
It was maddeningly obtuse at times.

I want to live in a world where it succeeds

I like the balloon game idea, and the random holes, and I miss Glitch.

Okay, this guy definitely deserves the big bucks.

I worked with Keita last summer on a museum exhibition at the Museum of Art and Design in New York. He gave us ideas much in this style, and then we executed them and installed them in... sort of a jungle made out of cardboard. With a volcano ball pit.

Kotaku had some pretty great coverage by Evan Narcisse.

Having worked with Keita, I can tell you, he's pretty much exactly what you'd want him to be, and one of my favorite people.

I miss Glitch so much :'( I had a dream last night about managing to get back into it.

This pot is now diamonds.

I would pay so much money to have Keita give me quick ideas on how to improve my life.

This is all just very happy and amiable. Thank you!

One of my favourite things in Glitch was Keita Takahashi's secret shrine to Stewart Butterfield. I miss that game every day. :(

Katamari Damacy is such an unrelenting ball of fun. We need more designers like Keita, so full of whimsy and joy. The world could use more of that.

I've done design work with kids before, and Keita's ideas remind me in some ways of the ideas that they come up with: fun, surprising, and something you wouldn't think of because of certain preconceptions of what the system you're designing is.

When I think MMOG I think progression, challenge, grinding, levels, gear, etc. But these ideas are instead about the joy of finding something unexpected. Exploring something because it's novel, or funny, instead of doing it to get points.

These are amazing. I especially liked the idea on page 4 of leaving footprints when you jump, and having special shoes leave special footprints behind.

I asked the Lord, "Why, when Glitch shut down, were there no sets of footprints in the sand?" And the Lord replied, "u have 2 jump, lol."

I really, really enjoyed the music in Glitch.

Looks like there was an indiegogo project to collect all the music, but as far as I can tell, there's nothing available yet.

That kinda sums up Glitch in general, and illustrates why it made total sense to me to see Keita Takahashi work for Tiny Speck. Glitch had levelling and experience and all that stuff, but there was never really a specific end goal. You did things in Glitch because it was fun, or because you were cultivating something in the game like a house or a garden, or because you wanted to see some goofy thing you'd heard about.

I kinda ran out of fun things to do after a while, but every now and then I'd see one of the Glitch changelog updates on my Twitter feed and wonder if I should go back and try again. Sadly, that's not an option anymore.

These are...adorable and whimsical and making me miss Glitch terribly. Especially since I just finished my Glitch cross-stitch (pattern by another Mefite, whose name escapes me at the moment, speak up whoever you are!) and have been trying to decide how best to frame and worship it.

Lest it seem like I'm mocking Takahashi's English, I actually find it charming. And these ideas are all great. It's a shame Glitch closed up before many of them could be implemented.

Yay badgermushroomSNAKE! That was me. I still haven't framed mine even though it's been done for four months. (And I have a quilt-in-progress about three-quarters finished with all the giants' symbols on it in reverse appliqué that I also have not touched in a few months—I think I am not quite over being melancholy about the game's closing.)

Is it weird/bad that when reading these ideas I actually hear them in my head as BMO explaining a new game to Finn and Jake?
posted by Doleful Creature at 9:34 PM on May 2, 2013 [2 favorites]

That's perfect! BMO's androgynous compu-speech fits these very well.

There's so many great things here. I'm still going through them, I recognize some that got implemented in Glitch. Some are incredibly novel and fun: "Chickens will run away if you type 'KFC'." Waking up to find your head is a cabbage -- and your real head is growing in a nearby field. Going into a -- this is genius -- matryoshka gate, to become really small. "Let's play start location roulette!"

Trampoline animals! Animals following you if you pet them a lot, potentially forming a queue with special music! Making creatures out of any item, complete with arms and legs, if you incubate them! A quest to find people using the same avatar parts as you (disabled for people with default appearance)! Jumping into the sun! A "somnambulant skill" for doing things while you're afk! Inflating balloons with Helium Gas and playing Balloon Fight against other Glitches!

GIANT ANIMALS if raised in your backyard for a long time, or human-like creatures with animal heads! Form a group with them (they'd have their own inventories!) and go adventuring with a party like Dragon Quest! But you have to feed them when hungry or they turn back into ordinary animals!

Autoplay music blocks in sequence if in music block bag! Tie balloons to animals and trees to float them around... but once high enough Rook attack them and send them plummeting back to ground! Overcultivate crops to get giant foods! Mario Galaxy-like localized gravity planets! Digging into the ground at the bottom of the shaft in Ilmenskie Deeps and digging tunnels freely Dig Dug style!

I've gotten up to Idea 120 now. These are so great! They make me miss the game even more.
