Still curious about that slice of log he's holding.

Yesterday the Green Machine beat the Portland Timbers 10-9. What makes this unusual is that the Green Machine is a youth club, and the winning goal was scored by Atticus Lane-Dupre, an 8yd old with cancer. And that the match, organized by the Make-A-Wish Foundation, was attended by thousands of enthusiastic fans.

Do not watch that video if you don't want to be seen crying at work.

Oh man, they even put together a banner and flares for the game!

Boy, you weren't kidding. Wow.

Best booing ever, too. :D A great event.

I have no problem admitting that I had been in the process of seeing if this had already been posted when I was distracted by the many wonderful things posted yesterday, instead, and was then delighted to see my search was now moot after surfacing.

Loved this story. The whole thing. The game write-up is a masterstroke of uplift. What an amazing community this kid has around him! All those people, so danged committed!

Just brilliant.

I love the pic of the guy getting the yellow card and he is smiling and the kids in the background are laughing.

Man, I really needed to see something positive and uplifting today, and this delivered in a major way. Awesome.

The log is a tradition in Portland. Every time a Timbers player scores a goal, a huge guy called Timber Joey with a chainsaw cuts a slice off a log and at the end of the game all the Timbers who scored get to present their logs to the Timbers Army, which is the fiercest and loudest supporters group in North America (and yes, I include Mexico).

I am a Vancouver Whitecaps fan, and a Southsider, and Portland are one of our fiercest rivals. The Timbers just beat us hands down for the coolest thing ever. Grr.

I cried like a baby both times I watched that highlight video. For anyone who's been to enough live Timbers games to know the rituals, the custom scarves, banners, and cheers from the Timbers Army all combine to show how seriously the community took their role in making the event perfect.

I attended this match, and it was excellent fun. The crowd of 3000 was almost as loud as a regular Timbers game. My friends' son plays on the Green Machine team and they were ecstatic.

The Timbers just beat everyone hands down for the coolest thing ever.

The red card was the best thing. A Timbers player completely accidentally knocked a kid over while walking backwards away from a play. STRAIGHT RED. Nothing less than deserved. :)

I am a Revs fan by location and a Sounders fan by passion. I don't want to like the Timbers, but dammit, that was the most incredible thing I've seen a pro sports team do in a long time.

If the video that troika linked to made you cry, then you'll definitely want to avoid this one.

the Green Machine beat the Portland Timbers 10-9.

Shocking defence from both sides evident in the scoreline there. You'll win nothing with kids.

The Timbers did a seriously cool thing here, and I give them massive kudos. And this is from a Seattle Sounders FC supporter and a member of the Emerald City Supporters.

Vamos United, but that was outstanding. Bravo Timbers.

I think we need an anxious little corner of Metafilter for Cascadia Cup rivals...today we fawn at the TA...tomorrow beer and blood!

The red card went to Canadian international Will Johnson who had a terrible game. Nutmegged for a goal and then a well deserved sending off. His upcoming automatic two game suspension in friendlies against U12 teams is really just his own damn fault...

And jaduncan, this whole episode proves Alan Hansen wrong on every count...you'll win several times over with kids!

Also one more thing...from Atticus himself:"Usually kids just choose to go Disneyland with their family or getting something," Lane-Dupre said. "I chose something that lots of people (could do)."

Fuck me. The world cannot afford to lose this kid.

And it still goes on. This week, the MLS regular feature, Anatomy of a Goal, featured a really good analysis of Atticus' game winner. The comments are gold, including one from Atticus' dad.
