Get well soon, Dr. Frank-N-Furter

Whether you love him for his role as the Sweet Transvestite in The Rocky Horror Picture Show, the Lord of Darkness in Ridley Scott's Legend, Pennywise the clown in the TV adaptation of Stephen King's It, Wadsworth the butler in Clue, Long John Silver in Muppet Treasure Island, his voice work for scads of cartoons, his countless theater performances, his many unforgettable, wonderfully strange guest spots on various TV shows, his absolutely amazing voice, or for (quite possibly) all of these things at once, the fact is, you love Tim Curry. Spare a thought tonight for this acclaimed, ubiquitous character actor, singer, dancer, and odd-looking, sexy little man. Tim Curry, 67, has had a major stroke at his home in Los Angeles. Early reports said that he was left unable to speak, but his agent now tells the Daily Mail that he's "doing great (...) He absolutely can speak and is recovering at this time and in great humor."

Tim Curry did excellent work in an obscure film called 'The Ploughman's Lunch', about British journalists lying to one another. It was filmed in the early '80s, when I understand Curry was trying to build an acting career while trying desperately to avoid being typecast as Frank-n-Furter.

I realised after watching 'The Ploughman's Lunch' that the film had drama without car chases or gunfights, sex without sequins or lingerie, and it was really really compelling. Tim Curry has helped to give me a more sophisticated outlook on film.

I hope he recovers quickly and well.

"I'd like to propose a rule that if you're posting about somebody beloved your post should start with "The going to be perfectly alright..."

Well, the title of the post DOES begin with "get well soon..." I'd hoped that would keep people from assuming the worst.

As I recall, years ago Leslie Halliwell described Curry as hard to cast, but with a wide range. I think the paradox of that line says something about why Curry's always been stuck as a cult figure, despite his obvious talents. He can do a lot of things amazingly well, but "normal" isn't exactly his forte. Casting directors seem to think he's too odd (and old, at this point) for leading roles, yet he's too charismatic to totally disappear into a group for long, your eye goes right to him. So in a lot of his movies, you're kind of stuck following these comparatively boring people around and waiting for Curry to show up again and really do his thing, or watching him do about 15% of what he's capable of doing. He's an ideal villain, but for some reason he hasn't gotten as many really juicy bad guy roles as he should have either.

"sex without sequins or lingerie"

Wait, what? What's bad about sequins and lingerie?

There is nothing inexplicable about loving the movie Clue.

The cast is a Who's Who of comedy character actors and are utterly brilliant, the script is sharp and snappy in a way which one simply does NOT find in movies anymore, the filming and direction are perfect for the tone of the film. It's got a higher ratio of awesome quotes per minute than most films EVER have.

It's yet another one of those 80s movies which fell over and died at the box office but has an avid, well-deserved cult following.

Apparently Gore "Pirates Of The Caribbean" Verbinski is attached to develop a new movie based on Clue. It can't possibly ever be as good.

I'll throw in love for Blood Moon (also known as Wolf Girl), about a young woman with hypertrichosis. Curry plays the owner and manager of the traveling freakshow which took her in as a baby. He's amazingly morally ambiguous. He displays great care for his charges but you can never quite tell if this is his love for these people or simply his livelihood. Is he an exploiter or a saint helping these people make their way through lives the best he can? It's sort of a B-plot, but most actors would have gone to one side or another; Curry manages to keep you guessing throughout. All reports indicate that Curry, when the camera was off, was happy to share tricks of the trade with the younger members of the cast.

And now I want to see him do another take on evil clowns in Gingerclown.

In Eco's he Island of the Day Before, Roberto and Ferrante come to blows (or, swords):
"No!" Roberto shouted. "I will not allow it! I will kill you and free Christ. I can still wield my sword, and it was to me, not you, that my father taught his secrets!"

"I have had only one father, one mother: your festered mind," Ferrante said with a sad smile. "You taught me only to hate. Do you think you have given me a great gift, giving me life so that in your Land of Romances I could embody Suspicion? As long as you are alive, thinking for me what I must think, I will never cease to despise myself, So whether you kill me or I kill you, the end is the same. En garde!"
Curry doesn't just read it, he brings it to a passionate boil and delivers an explosive "EN GARDE!" where you can practically hear the steel sliding out of the scabbard. He does 17th century Italians rather well, and would probably do well with the 20th century oddballs of Foucault's Pendulum, especially the oily Agliè.

Not very much in this thread so far about "Times Square," an odd (and uneven) film directed by Allan Moyle, starring Robin Johnson, who seems to have disappeared, and Trini Alvarado, who's still working steadily. Curry's the DJ who keeps the young ladies sane and ironically, from his remove in the booth overlooking Times Square itself, functions as their conscience.

Or at least that's how I recall the film, having not seen it in many years. It's currently difficult to see, out-of-print on DVD, long-overdue for a re-release. Moyle quarreled with producer Robert Stigwood and left the set before shooting was completed; he would explore some of the same ideas--distance, disaffection, dual identities, the passionate yearning for an object for one's passionate yearning--years later in "Pump Up The Volume". "Volume"'s a smoother ride, and Moyle obviously had more control that time out, but "Times Square," a few outlandish touches aside, seemed grittier and in its very uneven-ness, more urgent. If I'm recalling it at all correctly...

I watched "Rocky Horror" with my sweetie as recently as late last year, when Seattle's Neptune Theater hosted a free screening. The Neptune is now a concert hall, but it showed movies for decades, and I practically grew up in it, midnight "Rocky"s included. For its reopening, new management brought back the film for one night, old time's sake.

Well, the sound was very muddy and nobody (that I noticed) threw toast, but I did enjoy the sight of a female Rocky. She was roughly half the size of the halfbacked-sized Frank, and made light of her frame by straining to lift Rocky's weights. For the climactic climb-the-tower scene, he had to put her on his back, instead of the other way round.

I hope the Good Dr. would have chuckled from the Hills...

The best quote from the Rocky Horror movie is when Tim Curry says "Whatever happened to Fay Wray" it cracks me up every time I think about it.
posted by Narrative_Historian at 12:31 AM on May 28, 2013

"She went ape-shit" is the common audience response line.

"That delicate satin-draped frame... As it clung to her thigh"

"What? The ape shit?"

"How I started to cry"

"I'd cry too if I had ape shit on my thigh"

"'Cause I wanted to be dressed just the same"

"So did I, honey..."

(Lordy, and I haven't been to a Rocky Horror showing since... the late 1980s.)

I feel morally obliged to report thusly: Fay Wray lived twenty-nine years after "Rocky Horror Picture Show"'s release, although there is, so far as I know, no evidence that she ever saw the film. She did live in Manhattan the last years of her life. According to IMDb, her final screen credit was a TV movie called "Gideon's Trumpet" in 1980. Her final big-screen credit was much earlier; 1958's "Dragstrip Riot." I'm betting Frank liked that one better.

My favorite "King Kong" story: Wray was not a natural blonde, and wore a wig throughout the film. According to Wray, RKO wanted Jean Harlow for the part of Ann Darrow, but Harlow went under exclusive contract to MGM while "Kong" was still in pre-production. The rest, of course...history.

"The Girl With The Golden Lungs," as Wray was dubbed by the press after "Kong" came out, died quietly in her sleep, just five weeks short of her ninety-seventh birthday. She returned to Hollywood one last time, to stay.

She was also in one other film "Rocky Horror" references. Anyone...anyone...?
