An Open Letter to Paula Deen, from culinary historian Michael William Twitty.

This post was deleted for the following reason: There is an open and active Paula Deen thread where this might fit better. If someone wants to do a full-on Twitty post, that might be a good alternative. -- restless_nomad

Interesting. Thanks.

Great article, even better than I had anticipated. I look forward to checking out more of Mr. Twitty's work.

This was noted in a comment in the previous thread.

I'm not happy that she said what she said, but whatever it took to get rid of her pop-culinary dreck is fine by me.

Excuse me, while I go shopping for heavily discounted Paula Deen branded cookware.

I haven't read the previous thread at all, cribcage. Sorry about that.

Whoa. I had no idea who this guy was before reading this, and now I want to go work in his kitchen.

You remember all the flack that guy got for writing "Accidental Racist", based on the assumption that no one could be that stupid and unaware of their own racism?

Yeah. I think ya'll owe that guy an apology.

What's interesting is that there's been a lot of Paula Deen-branded items in the food section of Big Lots for a few months now. Maybe that just reflects her overall declining popularity, but for a moment I wondered if a corporate sponsor with insider knowledge of the coming revelations had gotten ahead of the competition in liquidating inventory of her stuff.

Twitty was on Bizarre Foods a while back. I recognized him instantly from that.

I've never watched her show, or really any other cooking shows for that matter. Is this ignoring the African-American contributions to Southern cooking really that common?

Totally unrelated to Paula Deen but Mr. Twitty was a guest on a fascinating episode of the Kojo Nnamdi Show that focused on urban agriculture and history, if anyone wants to learn more about him. Listen here. Transcript here.

Both his blogs are amazing. History and food, the perfect antidote to ignorance and food.
