My library system has a copy of Little Wars! A much more fun-sounding name than "war gaming".

"A game for boys from 12 to 150, and for that more intelligent sort of girl who likes boys' games and books..."- Damn, H.G. Wells. That's cold.

Do NOT click on that "10 Tragedies Caught on Film" link on the same page. Jesus.

"Adorable" is not usually the word that comes to mind when one thinks of Peter Cushing. But oh my god, was that adorable.

What I would give to see Cushing commanding Space Marines against Orks (perhaps led by Brian Blessed)!

So many things about this are perfect. The way the desk is a huge mess. The really careful way he has to step so he doesn't accidentally step on any of the soldiers that are all over the floor. The boxcover full of more soldiers. All totally familiar.

"I see you have applied your usual level of detail. Spraypaint the lot of them green, and then flick on a bit of black with a house painter's brush."
"OH, COME ON. I'VE PAINTED BLOOD ON ALL OF THEIR WEAPONS. THREE COLORS, THOSE ARE THE RULES. NOT ALL OF US HAVE A WHOLE BASEMENT FOR DOING UP FIGURES."
"Speaking of which, would you mind terribly if you kept it down? We do not want to wake my mother again."
"SORRY. IS THIS BETTER?"

Hmmm. In a free-for-all miniatures throwdown between Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Brian Blessed, Tilda Swinton, and Napoleon, who would win? Let's say they are playing with units from the Crimean War.

"Eponysterical" is not quite the word. But that comment in combination with your username, Genjiland, is a perfect distillation of something great about this place.

Things I did not think I had in common with Peter Cushing: miniatures painting (mine were D&D though). Totally recognized that look of concentration as he dabbed paint on one of them.

Tilda, obviously. Given that she's a future regeneration of Cushing, she already knows how the game will play out.

How was Napoleon an enthusiast for 'Little Wars' when it wasn't written until nearly 100 years after his death.

I understand what the narrator is actually trying to say - toy soldiers weren't invented by Wells, but it was almost as jarring as that 'more intelligent type of little girl' line.
