That's the problem with modern instrumental music - nobody seems to want to play a proper melody anymore!

Not one you could pursue in your apartment on rainy days, however.

"Hey there! Thought we better come over an introduce ourselves, we're the Johnsons we're just moving into Mrs. Fillison's old place next door. I'm Bill."

"Oh hey! Great to meet you guys, I'm Mike."

"Great to meet you to. Say! This thing you're workin' on looks amazing Mike, what is that?"

"Oh that's just my passion!"

"Wow. It looks kinda like an Organ pipe. Are you a musician, Mike?"

"No, Bill. It's, the foghorn from a World War 2 battleship."

"Right! Right. You shine them up...display 'em, Mike?"

"No, I mainly just like to test them."

"Wow. Ok. Say. How loud you think these things are?"

"Oh, with enough pressure I'll probably get about 140 decibels out of this thing."

"How loud is that?"

"Oh...That's louder than an Passenger Jet taking off. You'll probably be able to hear it for about four or five miles away. Sometimes they can blow windows out. Say, what do you do for a living Bill?"

"We work at home, spend painstaking months making exquisitely intricate and quite incredibly delicate models."

I recently did a project involving a lot of foghorns and the BigMikeSocal youtube channel was absolutely invaluable. It's also a great start point for a trip down the rabbit hole of Huge Horn Enthusiast forums - you'll come back changed (possibly with tinnitus).

I was camping at Port Canaveral for one of the last shuttle launches, and the Disney Dream tooted the When You Wish Upon A Star jingle on its way past and it was, well, magical.
